Go, Miss Ross! "Swept Away" really was a strong single, but her "last great" one? I would argue that that honor belongs to "Missing You." And off-Motown-topic, it's also nice to see J. Blackfoot get some Rolling Stone shine.

Really? A thread about the top singles of 1984, a year with so many great songs, and it's focused on one singer that fell in at #83?

There is a lot to see; they think it is rocks greatest year; I go with 64 66 67 70 80 or 81!

But, you directly linked it to the Diana Ross song in your opening post.

    Anyway, I also think 1984 was a great year, but I would also pick 1966, 1968, 1973, 1974, 1975, and many others in the 80s, 90s, and the 2000s.

1984 was the year for Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, and Madonna, hands down!

This is so weird. I would have never picked 1984 as one of the great years in music. I mean it didn't entirely suck, but a lot of what was out that year is unmemorable to me. Any year between 1974-78 would have made my cut and the years 1962-72. As far as the 80's go, 1980,81, 82, 83, 85, 86 and 88 were great music years.

Not to say it was bad, but the more forgettable year for me in the 80s is 1987. 1981 is pretty awful for pop music, but great for R&B. 1972 was bad for pop, but great for R&B. For me, R&B wasn't so great in 1977, but pop? Wonderful.

I agree with you on each one of the points you made here. 1987 sucked as far as mainstream music went. There were a few, a very few decent tracks that came out of some indies, underground, Chicago's house music scene etc, but over all the year was a bust!
