"Nightflight" Tue Aug 12, 9P-12M ET:...on a Warm Summer Night.....

Howdy, Nightflight listeners! Yes...I'm taking another tiny break from TCMS collection for one of my annual theme shows...Summer! To be truthful, Summer isn't my favorite season [[that crown goes to the beauty that is Autumn), but one thing that helps me get through Summer more easily and enjoy it more, is hearing some of the great Summer songs of the last 60 years or so. Tonight, of course, there will be LOTS of Motown, soul and disco...but also some of the great seasonal songs from the Great American Songbook. You're bound to hear something you like or something you've never heard on the airwaves [[yes...I will play that Summer song by Mary Wilson)! So, pour yourself a tall cool one and do join me tonight for some of the great songs of Summer ....on "Nightflight"...on WOMR 92.1 FM Provincetown and WFMR 91.3 FM Orleans and we are streaming live in digital stereo at www.womr.org Thanks! John

My fave summer song is The Tempt's, spoken, "it's Summer" which could pop up tonight as the B-side to Ball Of Confusion. See you tonight!

Thomas...you will be missed. As far as "Summertime" goes....Lord know there are 80,000 versions, and I could spend weeks...months just playing versions of it. So I had to pick 2....and they are both Motown affiliated tracks!

Howdy there John! Another "summer like" song - Sunshine Superman by Donovan. One of my favorite great tunes from the 60s. Those were the days indeed!

John, your summer time music tribute is fine and easy on the ears! I noticed a new Canadian stamp honouring k.d. lang was on sale at the post office today. Your summer theme this evening made me think of her her "Summer Fling" recording. HintName: P1150367.jpg

Any chance we might highlight the Cruel-er side of Summer with some Bananarama or the achingly beautiful I Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer by Stevie Wonder?

John, I really enjoyed Brenda Holloway's "Summer Time." Thank you for playing k.d.'s "Summer Fling" from her underrated lp, "Invincible Summer" which was a serious attempt to break into the pop music market. The music is inextricable from the sound of softly lapping blue-green water, the smell of soft drinks and sandwiches; the warm sand between your toes, the clink-clanking of ice cubes, much as all the wonderful summer themed music you've shared this evening!

Useless yet interesting backstory on Cruel Summer courtesy of the book I Want My MTV...

Siobhan Fahey - The "Cruel Summer" video was just an excuse to get us to the fabled city of New York for the first time. It was August, over one hundred degrees. Our HQ was a tavern under the Brooklyn Bridge, which had a ladies toilet with a chipped mirror where we had to do our makeup. When we repaired to the tavern for lunch, we met a bunch of dockworkers. They were intrigued by us and started chatting, and they all had these little vials of coke. I'd never done coke-I was aware of its existence, but I didn't know anyone who could afford it. We were exhausted and they gave us very generous bumps. That was our lunch. When you watch that video, we look really tired and miserable n the scenes we shot before lunch, and then the after lunch shots are all euphoric and manic.
