    alternate Sup albums

ok - didn't want to hijack the Happening thread with this, though i already did a bit lol

by the mid to late 60s, concept lps were becoming more and more in vogue. yet motown continued to rely on their formula of a hit single or two, plus filler. albeit often very good filler

so similar to the thread on remixing/altering Sup singles to make them better, let's do that with the lps. i'm starting with Reflections and Love Child.

i've made playlists in iTunes with my alt lps. i've looked at the recording dates of tracks and based on that and when the lp was released, created new lps. here's how i'd have compiled the album:

    Reflections

    side 1
    reflections
    i'm gonna make it
    i can't make it alone
    in and out of love
    can't shake it loose
    ode to billie joe

    side 2
    forever came today
    it's going all the way
    am i asking too much
    misery makes it's home
    a little breeze
    bah bah bah

    love child:
    side 1
love child lp version [[taking the original into and verses 1 and 2, adding in the missing 3rd verse and the extended outro)
    keep an eye
how long has that evening train
shadow of society [[yes even though this was on Cream, it was recorded in time to be on the LC lp)
Does your mama know about me
Beginning of the end of love

    Side 2
in the evening of our love
    what the world needs now
    if you should walk away
    wish i knew
    can't you see it's me
ain't no sun since you've been gone

i'm not 100% sure about In the Evening of our love for LC. totally different style, though still about heartache. and thought the lp needs something so it's not totally depressing.

also done the same for Promises Kept and Cream of the Crop. played around with an alt Let the Sunshine too

I've done this before. I hate the song line-up for the planned Some Things You Never Get Used To album. It was like someone threw it together in a day. Here's my tracklist for the planned Some Things You Never Get Used To. I've tried to make it into a concept album. A little unorthodox with the single being the last track, but it works within the concept...

    SIDE ONE
01.) Will This Be The Day
02.) Heaven Must Have Sent You
    03.) He's My Sunny Boy
    04.) Sweet Thing
05.) You've Been So Wonderful To Me
06.) [[Don't Break These) Chains Of Love

    SIDE TWO
    01.) I'll Set You Free
    02.) A Little Breeze
03.) If You Should Walk Away
04.) The Beginning Of The End Of Love
05.) Stay In My Lonely Arms
06.) Some Things You Never Get Used To

I'm looking forward to your "Cream of the Crop" lineup. Sadly, their last official studio album was a real mismatch of tracks. Of course there were some good tracks and vocal performances, but it always caused me to wonder why Berry Gordy [[with his years of genius production skills) allowed this album to come out in this "choppy" format.

i haven't done as great of a job with Cream. with Reflections and Love Child, there seems to be a bit of a concept to work around. Reflections and many of the tracks share some strong production values. that whole psychedelic-light sound. I kept In and Out and a few more pop tracks that seemed to follow in that vein. the covers on the original seem a bit out of place. truly just filler

i like Brad's Something lp. i think with that disc, a strong solid pop sound works. and you've taken many of the great tracks from the actually Love Child lp. i was struggling how to work those into something since i do really like them

I had wondered with Sunshine if it would work as an [[almost) 100% cover lp.

    Side One
    Let The Sunshine In
    The Composer
    Hey Western Union Man
    Up Up and Away
    What Become of the Brokenhearted
    i'm Living In Shame

    Side 2
No Matter What Sign You Are
    Love Makes Me Do Foolish
    It's Not Unusual
    Heaven Must have sent you
    Hey Jude
    ?

i also wondered if a side by Smokey could work:
    Composer
    Are You Sure Love
    Then
    Sweet Thing
    Treat Me Nice John Henry

    Cream of the Crop
    Side 1
    Someday We'll Be Together
    You Gave Me Love
    Hey Jude
    The Young Folk
    you're Gonna Hear from me
Loving you Is Better than ever

    Side 2
    When it's to the top
    Till Johnny Comes
    Beginning of the End
    The Precious Memories
    The Look of Love
    I'll Set you Free

Did Smokey do Till JOhnny Comes? if so maybe that could be the 6th track on the "Smokey" side of Sunshine. or else they could go back into the can and pull an older track

ok 1 more album. here's my Promises Kept:

    Side 1
Can't Get you out of my mind
    Tears Left Over
    Make it with you
    Take Your dreams back
I ain't that easy to love
    It's too late

    Side 2
    Still Water
    Oh My Poor Baby
    Never can say goodbye
    All I need
I'll have to let him know
And i thought you loved me

i'll also re-edit Stone Love lp [[aka New Ways lolol)
i'd cut Na Na and replace with Life Beats or maybe Steppin On A Dream. this is a great track that i got on a bootleg. not sure who produced but a driving track. i'm assuming this is the song with the chorus You Went and Stepped on my dream, gave your love to somebody else.

and if the Composer had been a hit, wonder if they would have done a Smokey lp? they did a lot of tracks with him in 67 and 68. potential line up?

    Side 1
    The Composer
Are You Sure Love is the Name of this Game
    Treat Me Nice John Henry
    He's My Sunny Boy
    Sweet Thing
    Will This Be The Day

    Side 2
    Take Me Where You Go
    Ooowee Baby
Too Much a little too soon
    ?
    ?
    ?

That's it although there were 2 tracks on Reflections [[Then and Misery Makes it's Home) that would work nicely on this lp. Oowee Baby might be a bit too "old" by 68. they might have had to record some more tunes to pad the lp out

I like this listing except I would keep Na Na and replace Come Together with Life Beats

i think Come Together works pretty well with the overall lp. but IMO Na Na doesn't. though it would have worked perfect on Right On

i realized a hadn't done a playlist with an alt Sup 75 lp. here's my first stab at it. from a time perspective since i'm using some of the longer/extended versions, it probably wouldn't have all fit on 1 vinyl but close enough

    Side 1
    He's My Man [[extended version)
    I Can Never Recover
    Can We Love Again
    Seed Of Love
Where Do I Go From Here
This is Why I Believe in You

    Side 2
    It's All Been Said Before
    Color My World Blue
Give Out, But Don't Give Up
    You Turn Me Around
You Can't Stop a Girl In Love
    Dance Fever

I've always liked "Na Na", but can't get past the ending. To me, Jean riffing and hooting and hollering gets a bit annoying . Don't get me wrong, I love Jean's voice and she can take me to church any day [[for example "Love Train"), but I almost think no one knew how to end the song, so they just let Jean loose.

added another alt LP concept to my playlists. the released Ross [[1978) was a rather mediocre package. according to Randy's latest Diana bio, it was initially titled Feelin' Fun and was to be a disco lp. i did 1 playlist as such. then looking over the tracks i hadn't included [[the ballads, lighter pop) and given the "menthol cool' aura of the lp cover art lol i didn't another mix of Ross

    Feelin' Fun
    Side 1
Lovin' Livin' and Givin' [[Ross lp mix)
    What you gave me
You Build Me Up To Tear Me Down
    You were the one

    Side Two
    For Once In My Life
We can never light that old flame
    Fire Don't Burn
    Sweet Summertime Lovin

    Ross [[pop version)
    Side 1
    Together
    Share Some Love
    Harmony
Never Say I Don't Love you

    Side 2
    Old Funky Rolls
    Come Together
Sorry Does't Always make it right
    Where did we go wrong
    We're always saying goodbye
    To love again

2 other LPs i've been toying with are the Mahogany soundtrack and the the unreleased Revelations

based on my reading, i've assembled a couple of tracks for Revelations

    Come Together [[alt mix)
    Sweet Summertime Lovin
    Fire Don't Burn
We Can Never Light that old flame again
    Old Funky Rolls

for Mahogany i was going to pull some of the Michael Masser tracks from Diana Ross [[76) like After you, To Love Again, Theme from Mahogany plus some of the instrumental tracks like Mahogany Suite, Mahogany instrumental, Feeling Again, Christian's Theme, My hero is a gun, etc. i'd cut She's the Ideal Girl, Let's go back to day one.
