    "Nightflight" Tue July 29, 9P-12M ET: TCMS...1969 ENDS...1970 BEGINS!

Howdy, Nightfliers!! Tonight we leave good old 1969 and enter a brand new year AND a new decade for The Complete Motown Singles collection. So many changes for Motown during this year. Personally, the 2 most significant things that happened for me Motown-wise were the passing of our dear Tammi Terrell...and the gain of the miraculous Jean Terrell joining the Supremes upon Diana Ross finally taking up her own solo career. But the Motown hits just kept on coming [[to paraphrase the late, great Bill Drake)! And you'll hear them all...A sides and B sides, promos and alternate mixes...and the occasional extended version. All that and more...tonight...on "Nightflight"...on WOMR 92.1 FM Provincetown and WFMR 91.3 FM Orleans and streaming live worldwide in digital stereo at www.womr.org Thanks! John PS....and a BIG PS it is....thanks to SDF's own ROSSHOLLOWAY/Bobby Gardner for sharing the music that you'll hear tonight....thanks so much, Bobby!

Yeah.... We've crossed to 1970! While I enjoy 69'ing as much as the average listener, we were at it so long I almost got lockjaw...... From dropping my mouth open in awe at all the great singles and extended versions of the year

I'm joining to listen in late and came in through the WOMR web site. But does anyone have the link to the other URL where you could just access this as well as other stations quite easily? I lost all my book marks recently but I liked that URL.

A bit of trivia. Although "The Bells"/"I'll Wait For You" is the first single on TCMS Vol 10: 1970, it was the second single released by Motown that year.
The first, VIP 25053- Bobby Taylor's "Oh I've Been Blessed"/"Blackmail". The A-side had been scheduled for Gordy 7088 in July 1969 but not released then

That's it! Thanks so much Methusleah2! I just clicked it in and its audio quality is much better than going through WOMR's site directly and accessing the media via VLC. Thanks again!

Blinky Williams states that she, Gloria Jones & Edna Wright-almost became a Motown girl group The Honeybees . Ah, what might have been!
And "Blackmail" was the b-side, see post #26

Do you have the alternate "Evils Of Society" ending for I Should Be Proud? It's great also.

Did Norman Whitfeld sue Edwin over "Time" ??

I bought the 45 before I realized how derivative it was, but his vocal is great

I Should Be Proud - and it's AMAZING vocal - was pulled and messed with. It never charted and a month after it was released, they did it on The Dating Game, I ordered it from our biggest record store and it didn't arrive until July. Even if it was gonna flop, it still would have charted low Pop and def R&B. This was originally scheduled for Gladys and given to Martha in late '69.

How refreshing to see pics of Ethel Merman on this site! One of my faves, The Merm would have been perfect for The V.I.P. label.

"Green Grow the Lilacs" was the b-side, but it had already been the b-side of Joe's debut Motown single, "Midnight Cowboy"

"What'cha Gonna Do" was released on the day of Diana Ross & the Supremes' final performance.
It took 6 attempts at the lead vocal between September 9, 1968 and May 31, 1969 to get the performance that was used. Terry says the Berry loved the song.

The Vietnam war-themed "Forget Me Not" had been a UK hit, so "I Should Be Proud" should have been an obvious choice for a single, yet it wasn't released over here. One of Martha's best records.

Although war themed, I think "Forget Me Not" was a more universal message. It could apply to any girl saying goodbye to her fellow going off to war. Also, it wasn't a protest song. It was more along the lines of "Soldier Boy" by the Shirelles. Finally, I think it was just a better song all the way round than was "I Should Be Proud." Although I think Martha sings the hell out of "Should Be Proud," it has an odd melody structure, and I think is in a minor key [[though I'm no expert to be sure), and is not meant to be uplifting or melodic as is "Forget Me Not." I guess considering the times, the powers that be just felt the US market was not in the mood for any song that made going to war seem uplifting.

The odd melodic structure would have made it stand out from the crowd. "Forget Me Not" had the "Dixie" instrumental break to grab the attention. I think both songs would have been hits on both sides of the pond if they had received sufficient airplay.

You know at the time, living in Detroit, my parents subscribed to the London Illustrated Times [[!) and that magazine actually reviewed the single "I Should Be Proud," commenting how unusual it was to see a protest song from Martha & the Vandellas.

According to the libretto, Martha Reeves believed the government exerted pressure on radio stations not to play the record.
