Ear Plugs

I notice that many of today's singers wear something in their ears while on stage singing. Don't know what they are called- I call them ear plugs. I was watching something on TV and a singer said in regards to the plugs, that they can hear themselves sing and stay in tune. I'm sure that there are some veteran artist who do indeed use them. What is the story with these ear plugs? Why do some use them and others don't. Or do they all use them?

Many singers, young and old, use them. But it's not universal. I know Mary Wilson uses them and often struggles with her "ears".
