    Discovering Motown Radio Show

Gather round, swingers and friends. My 2 hour weekly Motown live radio show [[finally!) starts this Sunday.

We've done six pre-recorded themed specials, but this is the real thing.

Every Sunday between 3-5 UK time [[10am-12noon Eastern), two hours of Motown and nothing but Motown. Well, other than me talking about Motown.

    [[SALES PITCH)
There'll be big hits, of course, but I've been given a free hand by Radio Cardiff in putting the tracks together, and so there's a healthy sampling of lesser-heard cuts in there too; albums, B-sides, Cellarful, artist anthologies and the darker recesses of The Complete Motown Singles are all well represented.
    [[/SALES PITCH)

People in the Cardiff area can tune in on 98.7FM... but since most of you aren't, worldwide listeners can tune in via TuneIn: http://tun.in/seM37

Older episodes will always be available on our Mixcloud: mixcloud.com/discoveringmotown

Hope you can join me - I've had a few requests already but I'm always happy to have more!

Cheers and KTF... see you Sunday!

Consider it done on both counts, honest man! [[what should I call you on air?) And thanks Roger for stepping in - I didn't completely understand either...!

Sorry for the brief gap there. The show returns this Sunday - I take a little break the last Sunday of every month for a different retro soul show to take over the slot. [[It's the last vestige of the original plans where I'd have a show every other week alternating with those guys, but they only wanted to do one a month so I do the other three Sundays... kind of complicated!) I can't complain, the station has been nothing but supportive in giving me 2 hours to play Motown B-sides and demos.

Anyway. Do tune in Sunday 3pm UK [[10am Eastern, 7am Pacific) - and the two "episodes" will be available to listen to online as usual on Sunday and Wednesday evening respectively. Anyone have any more requests? I'm happy to fill 'em!

    Steve

Thanks again to everyone who's been in touch for all the feedback - I'm a writer and not a DJ and things are still a bit shaky, but hopefully my love for Motown and the men and women who made this amazing music at least shines through...!

I hate to be a pain, but is there any chance one of the moderators could change the title of this thread [[to "Discovering Motown: weekly classic Motown radio show" or something along those lines?

    Thanks!

Great programming..great taste. Will have to listen to some of these. I think the right mix of familiar vs. novel tunes. Hopefully some lovers of classic Motown will hear some things they haven't heard before.

  27. #27
    Thanks Kenneth.

That's been the biggest balancing act here - it'd be easy for me to start playing 2 hours of alternate takes, B-sides and rare stuff from acts nobody's ever heard of, and if it was just an Internet podcast from my bedroom then maybe I'd drift more in that direction - but it's a weekend daytime slot on a commercial FM radio station with sponsors to placate, bills to pay, license requirements to satisfy. Plus, it's Motown, so even the overplayed big hits are still a joy to play [[and I personally think they shine brighter when used sparingly in this context).

I'm not a particularly good presenter [[I think of myself as a writer, not a DJ), but I hope my love for the music comes across.

Motown at its most typical, and best IMO.

I sometimes muse if that track would have been considered for a single, but for the Temptations decision to make recordings which featured only their voices....

    Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.

"Motown Ladies" was the very first Discovering Motown show I recorded [[the day before "Motown Guys") - it was one of six pre-recorded stand-alone specials [[not listed above) which went out whenever the station had dead air to fill [[and can still be heard occasionally now!), before I got the go-ahead to have a regular live show of my own. They were made for a general audience and so have a rather higher proportion of big hits to hard-to-find classics than the regular show, but I did sneak a few offbeat picks in there too...

The six specials are as follows:-

For Easter Sunday, here's episode 15 - jam packed with big names and offbeat choices. Highlights: playing Brenda H. and the Velvelettes in honour of their triumphant UK live appearances, and getting Gladys' How Great Thou Art on the radio. Anyway, enjoy!

[[Artwork story: I wanted to adapt the magenta sleeve from the Tamla Motown 45s box set, but couldn't find a clear picture, so I just tinted another one in Photoshop - while I was doing it, I found a way to tint the sleeve any colour I wanted, and so the covers for the next thirty or so shows are the Tamla Motown sleeve in a variety of colours that have never existed in real life...)

A little late! Here's episode 17 to get May off to a flying start!

We had a major technical problem at the start [[just for a change!) which means nobody could hear my voice - which might be a bonus, I don't know... Anyway, I'm once again very proud of some of these song choices.

And now, here's Episode 18! I know I keep saying this, but I'm so proud of playing some of this stuff on the radio. This one is especially fun and upbeat thanks to the run of early '60s girl group pop tunes in the first half, which I've been waiting to do for ages.
