'Roger' has never been as popular a male name as Robert. At least here in the UK, if you had asked some people to select names from a list which could denote someone being perceived as more middle-upper class, then 'Roger' would be among them - I'd say also 'Ralph' and 'Robin'.

For some reason, it has become a slang term for a man's role in sexual intercourse.

The derivation of Roger is "someone who achieves fame with a spear", so the slang meaning follows from that.

Nice one but, in reality, the 'fame and spear' reference comes from the Germanic 'hrod' and ger'..and since that is not commonly known to most, unlikely to be the real answer.

Can't seem to find how it came about - it smacks of Cockney, but I can't think how it could be translated.

'Received Order Given, Expect Results' seems somewhat appropriate but, again, unlikely, unless the 'other' meaning did indeed emanate from the military....

If you mean the use of 'Jerry' to indicate German people, and particularly German troops, then the answer is no.

It is a nickname, but one which was formerly in use, and may have been in most use during WW1. It was also used in WW2, probably as a result of hearing it used by older relatives.

It's unlikely that anyone aged 70 or less will ever have used it much, if at all. I never have.

Ditto for use to indicate a chamber pot, as improved sanitation following WW2 led to them being less required..and surviving items now in most use as decorative pot plant holders. We have at least three in the sitting room....

I had a school friend whose middle name was the Scottish "Menzies". The correct pronunciation of that is "Mingiz".

When I visited the USA in the 90s, there was a movement on Hawaii for independence. What happened to that?

Nothing. They stand to gain less than they would lose. There are also periodic episodes with people in Texas and Puerto Rico seeking independence. It's usually just a tiny, very vocal minority that wants it. Sort of like with the French Canadians who clamor from time to time for independence. Fortunately, nobody understands what they're saying because they're speaking French.

Facts are overrated when creating a good historical film. If you want accuracy, read the book. If you want blood, curse words, and boobies, it's best to watch the movie.

I agree, and believe that is often the truth when books are used as a basis for a film production.

I have sometimes wondered how often it works the other way around - and if there is a significant increase in sales of a book following the release of a successful film..or if, by that time in the process, the book then only serves simply as a sampler for the film.

Seeing the films "Fight Club" and "American Psycho" inspired me to read the books, and it was worth the effort.

I enjoyed them. The main reason I bought them was to fill in gaps in the films that weren't quite explained.

Yes, I imagine that would be very helpful. Maybe, if you had repeated viewings of the films, with the express intention of filling in the missing gaps, they might have been explained, but you had just missed them first time...but I wouldn't be at all surprised if you are correct.

It's generally true that publishing editors often wish to heavily prune the author's original draft, but that still becomes the original version. I'm not one to do it, but I gather there are quite a few people who log lapses in continuity [[and also historical inaccuracies) in films, due to heavy editing.
