Good luck to the seller. At $350.00 this is clearly marketed to a serious Motown collector, most of which I would assume have every one of these "big hits" somewhere in their collection.....

I'm not so sure about that. I think there may be collectors that missed one or two [[I know I have), and really want the ones they missed...that's why I posted it.

Was Vol. 11 ever released on CD? It's cover had a different design than the others.

Vol. 7. That was my favourite. When I bought it there were tracks I'd never heard before. The Isley's track, All because I love you, is their best song, IMO.As the years past I eventually had all the tracks elsewhere in my collection so I sold it with Vol 8 [[a couple of years ago) I'd still like that set though. I'll never break that habit!

But don't forget about the original cover design of Vol. 1, which was also different from the others:

    tamla617,

If you would like this album, I'll mail it to you!

    cheers

    Mike

I think I've said it before, but I really think these need to be given the Hip-O Select treatment, as I believe the original CD releases didn't always use the correct mixes, i.e., the ones not used on the original albums.

And it would be great if they did the UK versions too with the different track line ups.

But I suppose if you can afford it, the ones on eBay will suffice!

    Cheers

    Paul

These are the different UK versions [[ran to 8 volumes). Volumes 4 and 5 were transposed versions of the US volumes. Hitsville USA is Vol 2 and Motown Magic is Vol 3....

Roger, I think I got lucky on this one. Both discs were anatomically correct wrt track listing and labeling. The vinyl discs covers and compact discs are posted for these two along with other nine US covers from the series. [Whoops! Didn't read carefully enough to see on the first pass this discussion is about UK releases. Sorry.]

Bradburger indicated that that the wrong mixes were used in producing the series. While Volume 5 was the worst of the group, I was really pleased to get volumes one, two, and three with stereo tracks. Please correct me where needed, but I don't think the original vinyl of these three were released in stereo. The original series was treasured for having stereo mixes that didn't appear on the artists' albums. Don't forget, this happened 35 to 40 years before Hipp-O entered the game in this millennium with alternate mixes and takes.

Volume 7 is a real favourite of mine too, tamla. Nice that there were album tracks [[I Gotta Find A Way) and unreleased cuts [[the isleys, as you stated), in among the single releases.

Paul you are correct the mixes were not the same.

On the CDs they are marked Stereo but they have a mix of mono and Stereo especially Vol 5 & 6.

I have this group on Lp CD Cassette and Reel to Reel tape.

Only the Lp's and reel tapes have the correct mixes.

Vol 1 "package" and Vol 2 "collection" are both mono on the reel tape a 2 on 1..

It would be great if Motown Select would do the series in both mono and stereo mixes.

    Someday........

One Two and Three were released in Stereo in the USA in 1966 but they are extremely hard to find.

Mysterysinger - Your photos are terrific--lots of stuff I'd forgotten about, things I haven't seen for a very long time, things I'd never seen before. Loved all the train photos, too. Thanks so much for posting your link.

Thank you Methuselah2. Happy to share the pictures with like minded people. To me, the album covers are like works of art.

Vol 8 side two was one of the most played LPs in my collection. Those tracks, B3,5,6,7 and 8, weren't played on the radio, too young for the clubs. Never heard them at all before this LP. I didn't buy this 'till 72 . I found it in Harlequin, Oxford. Cost me 99p! Here is the full list for Vol 8.

A1 Diana Ross & The Supremes* – The Composer
A2 Four Tops – What Is A Man
A3 Martha Reeves & The Vandellas – Nowhere To Run
A4 Smokey Robinson & The Miracles* – Doggone Right
A5 David Ruffin – My Whole World Ended [[The Moment You Left Me)
A6 Isley Brothers* – I Guess I'll Always Love You
A7 Jnr. Walker & The All Stars* – What Does It Take [[To Win Your Love)
A8 Gladys Knight & The Pips* – The Nitty Gritty
B1 Temptations* – I Wish It Would Rain
B2 Shorty Long [[2) – Here Comes The Judge
B3 Stevie Wonder – You Met Your Match
B4 Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell – Good Lovin' Ain' Easy To Come By
B5 Edwin Starr – I Want My Baby Back
    B6 Marvin Gaye – You
B7 Jimmy Ruffin – Don't You Miss Me A Little Bit Baby
B8 Marv Johnson – I Miss You Baby [[How I Miss You)

I remember when I was a kid wondering why Vol. 2 had gone out of print and had been issued on the Tamla label, vs. the other volumes all issued on Motown in the US. When Vol. 2 finally came out in Stereo in '69 or '70, it was a revelation to me that the mixes were different and some of the songs were even rerecordings of the originals, most notably "I'll Have to Let Him Go" by the Vandellas. I think that was my first inkling that there was such a thing as "alternate versions!" I still love that album. The CD version of it also has the rare rerecordings as well.

Hi mj; sorry I didn't make myself clear. What I meant was; while the serious Motown collector may not have these ACTUAL CD's, they most likely [[especially if they have TCM series) have all of the songs contained on these CD's.

I just got a copy of this and the Volume 6 as well --- UK Tamla/Motown mint copies in stereo.
The pressings are very high quality and the songs sound amazing. Clear and strong with great separation. Beautiful stereo version of "Does Your Mama Know About Me" on Vol. 7.
Great mix of tunes reflecting UK listener's taste. "Say You" by the Monitors -wow!
I'm so glad I'm into vinyl and not restricted to just CD's.....
Got lucky and got them both on eBay for $10....
