I have a Martha and the Vandellas badge which features Martha, Roz and Betty.
Thank you, John, for helping me out with that mistaken name. I've at last remembered my password and so can post again after a long while of silence!
I have a couple of unreleased songs on acetate John.
Great track from a great British CD, although it reminds in style of the Vandellas.
I asked Annette directly when she left the Vandellas and she said that it was June 1964. Her last recording session with the group was the Jimmy Mack / 3rd Finger Left Hand session on 18th June 1964.
Here's what Roz Holmes wrote today:
Hi David
That is me doing the talking part to that song.
Roz
Yes, the group was signed to Motown directly and so it was Motown who fired them. I've seen Annette Helton's Motown contract and she was signed to the company, as was Roz, anad so were employees of...
Roz was in a bad car smash a couple of months ago which accounts for her stiffness.
Lead singer was Roschelle Laughhun with Rosalind Holmes doing bvs behind her. Where was Annette?!! Two thirds of the Original Vandellas were there.
Heat Wave by Martha with great bvs from Annette and Roz. Perfection.
I love this version but of course it's horses for courses and for me, Mary is right at the top of my list of favourite female recording stars. Just wonder who are on the bvs.
For me, Heat Wave is the perfect pop / soul record. Martha is metaphorically on fire as she leads with such force and raw emotion and Annette and Roz give her the most perfect backing vocals ever...
it's La La loud and clear.
When Annette Helton, a Del Phi and Original Vandella, heard this song she was shocked. “This song I don't even remember. I haven't heard it since the day we recorded it with Joe Hunter. Martha does...
Happy birthday to Annette Helton - an Original Vandella who celebrates a very special birthday today on this, the most American of holidays. May your day be blessed and happy, Annette.
Connie Francis' husband was Dick Kanellis, Tony. Well, he was her husband for about 5 months which was some kind of record for Miss Francis!! [[LOL)
So it seems that most are in favour of a Motown girl release, sing Carolyn with other ladies who haven't enough tracks to make up a complete CD of their own. I'd go with that. Maybe Harry will read...
I'd like to see carolyn's Motown material combined with other neglected girl singers like LaBrenda Benn for example, as this may be the only way we'll ever see their material released. if Hip-O...
That's OK, Randy. Like you, I love my girl groups, as I know you do, and the Cookies are right up there in the leading bunch of favourites, although I'm a real sucker for La La Brooks of the...
I spoke with Margaret Ross at the Pondeerosa Stomp Girl Group concert in New York last August and she said that Earl Jean was fine, as was her child who looks like Gerry. Earl Jean was lead singer on...
Fantastic news, Keith, form you, Mick and Ace Reecords. I'll pay the asking price just for the CD cover photo which is just spectactular. A great find and a distinguished cover.
Put me down for a...
Is the Rainbow album the one that came out on the Phonorama label in Canada? It has tracks on it like Feel Like Makin' Love, Hearts On Fire and The Thrill Is Gone among others?
How great to see both Annette & Roz step out front and sing lead. I like what I've heard this morning.
I'm with you, Ralph, on this Supremes issue. I long ago stopped looking at any thread to do with the group as I didn't join SD to be blasted by such Drama Queens on such ancient issues like the RTL...
Yes, I'm in the UK and I ordered my copy on 23rd February. I think that sometimes it's just down to the luck of the darw.
