David Gates & Bread
Who draws the crowd and plays so loud,
Baby its the guitar man.
Whos gonna steal the show, you know
Baby its the guitar man,
He can make you love, he can make you cry
He will bring you down, then hell get you high
Somethin keeps him goin, miles and miles a day
To find another place to play.
Night after night who treats you right,
Baby its the guitar man
Whos on the radio, you go listen
To the guitar man
Then he comes to town, and you see his face,
And you think you might like to take his place
Somethin keeps him driftin miles and miles away
Searchin for the songs to play.
Then you listen to the music and you like to sing along,
You want to get the meaning out of each and evry song
Then you find yourself a message and some words to call your own
And take them home.
He can make you love, he can get you high
He will bring you down, then hell make you cry
Somethin keeps him movin, but no one seems to know
What it is that makes him go.
Then the lights begin to flicker and the sound is getting dim
The voice begins to falter and the crowds are getting thin
But he never seems to notice hes just got to find
Another place to play,
Anyway got to play, anyway got to play.

Whatever happened to David Gates?
Sad song, so true for so many..............

David Gates passed away a couple of years ago from cancer...Jimmy Griffin also died of cancer some time ago.
Best,
Mark

I don't recall reading anything about David passing away and Wikipedia shows him as still alive. Can anyone verify?
-
I don't remember him dying, either... then again, I thought George Macrae was dead for the longest time!
-
Gates and Griffin put aside their differences, and reunited for a final Bread tour in 1996-1997 with Botts and Knechtel. With the passing of three of the other principal members of Bread, Gates is the sole surviving band member from their heyday, although Royer still successfully works in Nashville.
That is from Wikipedia............so I don't think he has died, but most of the rest of the band, from it's heyday, have.

I really liked a lot of their, and David Gates' solo songs, too.
I always found "Aubry" as one of the more interesting because of the key changes.

Here's a nice David Gates song by Margie Joseph Baby I'm a Want You

I'm not sure that they fit, but I've always thought it was a shame that there is no room for the likes of Bread, Petula Clark, the Carpenters, the Marvelettes etc. in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Instead of some of the headbangers they are throwing in there............spreading the wings might have been more appropriate.

Yes. David should definitely be in, for his songwriting [[think of all the great Girls Group songs he wrote.

Funny, I remember reading his obit a couple of years ago...

Mark:
Perhaps you read of someone similar passing away and confused them with him. I know that happens with me sometimes.
-
David Gates is still alive.

This is one of my favorite groups. Forget the records you should go to youtube and hear them live! I like Sweet Surrender and Gates solo effort Took the Last Train which deserved a much better fate on the charts it only went to number 30.
