I am pretty sure my first Motown LP was I Hear a Symphony, which I would have bought in very early 1966. As for my first Motown 45, I really have no memory of it. I do remember the first two 45s I ever bought, but they were not Motown. Back in those days, I always thought it odd that you could get an entire album for maybe $2.98 but 45s cost around 98 cents. So for a while at least, buying 45s did not seem like a very good value to me.
My first Motown single was "Don't Know Why I Love You" by Stevie Wonder on Tamla Motown [TMG690]. I bought it in 1969 before it got flipped over in favour of "My Cherie Amour".
My first Motown album was Four Tops Reach Out in September 1969. It was on Tamla Motown and it was in mono [TML 11056], with all of those glorious mono mixes.
I still have both of these records, plus a second copy of the Stevie single and the stereo LP version of Reach Out [STML 11056], which is simply no match for the mono to my ears.

45: Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine

I bought both in Minneapolis around 2006 when I was 16. The Marvin Gaye 45 came from Hymie's Vintage Records, and the Tammi LP came from Treehouse Records.
I was born in 1962. The very first Motown 45 I ever bought with my own money was probably "Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Do Da-Day" by Stevie Wonder.
See, back in the late 60s and early 70s, department, drug, and grocery stores used to sell distributor cut-outs, records they had in overstock, in packages of three or five. They had holes punched in the label, which I hated, but they were cheap, and a good way for a kid to get records. And, singe they were sealed, you didn't always know exactly what you were buying in the multipacks.
Since i'm not totally sure which record it was, I can rattle off other Motown titles that were bought in these packs:

The first Motown album I ever bought was "Maybe Tomorrow" by The Jackson 5, bought in October of 1971. Yes, I remember when I bought it.
In late 1973, I was riding my bike around town and found a $50 in the parking lot. That was an awful lot of money for a 11-year-old back then. I begged my mom to let me keep it, so I did whatever I wanted with it. So, I went up to a department store and bought The Temptations 3-LP Anthology. I wore that thing out! But, I was disappointed that the songs were almost all in stereo, and didn't sound like my older sister's mono 45s that I grew up with.
My first Motown album purchase was Where Did Our Love Go on December 26, 1964. It was a Christmas gift from my parents but I had to buy it myself.
My first Motown album purchase with my own money was More Hits, in the summer of 1965. I had to get my mother's permission because I was using her stereo. I asked if I could get either More Hits or Beatles '65. Her preference was for The Supremes, at the time she was not fond of The Beatles. She gave birth to my youngest brother in November 1964 so she had to listen to the Meet The Beatles album all year while she was most likely experiencing morning sickness.
Ironically my last Motown vinyl album purchase was also WDOLG which I bought in January of this year. It is the 140 gram reissue.
My first Motown 45 was probably Stop, In The Name Of Love. I wanted it for the picture sleeve even though my parents wouldn't allow 45s [which were considered kids' "toys"] to be played on their stereo console.
I then bought Back In My Arms Again, also for the picture sleeve. But an eye-opener for me was when I bought I Can't Help Myself from the Four Tops and saw it was the same label! WOW!
For my birthday and Christmas in 1965 I received Merry Christmas and At The Copa, respectively, and also my very own mono record player as big as a suitcase. I spent most of 1966 accumulating all sorts of Motown records.
First 45; Fingertips - Little Stevie Wonder
1965, my cousin had an extra copy of[temptin temptations]brand new and he gave me the extra...it started my album collection and today it sits proudly on the top shelf!

My first Motown 45 was "Come To Me" by Marv Johnson in 1959. I got "Money" by Barrett Strong, first on Anna records. But I had bought Miracles' records on End and Chess before that. I also had The Five Stars and Voice Masters in 1958. My first Motown LP was "Hi, We're The Miracles", followed closely by "Bye, Bye, Baby" by Mary Wells, and The Marvelettes' [["Please Mr. Postman"). I also had Marv Johnson's 1st UA LP [[Produced by Berry Gordy).
