Bobby Darin - Motown Years 1970 to 1973

In the late 60s and early 70s Motown signed several well established acts but then sort of took their eye off the ball resulting in frustration. True that a lot was happening at once with the move to LA and entering the film industry with "Lady Sings The Blues". Nevertheless there were some fantastic tracks from artists such as Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Bobby Darin and to a lesser extent Sammy Davis Jr and Lesley Gore.

Thankfully, in the case of Bobby Darin, material that had long been vaulted has been made available over the years - mainly thanks to Joe Marchesse & co [[e.g. Andy Skurrow) who've made it possible for these tracks to see release on CD. The Real Gone CDs have wonderful liner notes as well and are well worth looking up. In particular, "Another Song On My Mind" includes a great resume of Darin's Motown career - much of this can still be seen on the Real Gone website -

Motown Misprints

The "Marveletts" Sing - LP, 1962 is one example of a printing error; on some of Mary Wilson's "Red Hot" 45, it says "From the Upcoming Album, Mary MARTIN".

Can you think of any others?

The Lewis Sisters

Wondering if there is anything unreleased left the The Lewis Sisters.....they were such good singers with great harmonies. Everything I have ever heard by them is amazing.....You Need Me one of my all time favourite Motown songs. Don't Make Me Live Without Your Love on Cellarful Of Motown.....such a strong song that sounds great every time I hear it and I never get tired of hearing it.

They also wrote some great songs.....Martha & the Vandellas Happiness Is Guaranteed for one which could have been such a big hit around the time it was released on Watchout! Gladys Knight & the Pips Just Walk In My Shoes which of course was a hit. I would love to hear more of their Motown recordings if there is anything left to release!

Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story [Documentary]

Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story documentary makes its premiere at Toronto's Hot Docs film festival.

DIRECTED BY: MICHAEL MABBOTT, LUCAH ROSENBERG-LEE

Once you’ve heard Jackie Shane sing, you’ll never forget it. Yet, after shattering barriers as one of pop music’s first Black trans performers, this trail-blazing icon vanished from the spotlight at the height of her fame. From modest beginnings in Nashville, Shane soon recognized her talents and, in her late teens, made her way to Boston and Montreal, working the nightclub circuit while taking the stage with Frank Motley, a musician known for playing two trumpets at once. Her arrival in Toronto during its 1960s music explosion made her a highly sought-after headlining act who seemed destined to take her place among the R&B stars of the era. Blending her music with never-released phone conversations and soulful animated re-enactments, Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story brings Shane back to life in her own words, finally providing the recognition she so rightly deserves and introducing her to a generation fighting for their right to be their true selves.
