babbit you mentioned record stores in an earlier post.

do you recall any that were great for buying soul music?

for example a good stock of revilot/gw/rictic/thelma etc etc

And do they still have 'em?

I visited Tim Brown's premises in Todmorden quite a few years back now and he had unopened boxes of Ric-Tic stuff (25 per box I think). He told me that it was much more difficult to find the above labels in the USA.

That's probably because all the stocks of those legendary labels are over here now ;o)

Hello Re: Detroit record shops. I think we all know that by the mid '70's the UK's Martin Koppel & John Anderson and a couple of US Vinyl vacuum cleaners such as Val Shively had cleared Michigan dry of 45s. BUT they were almost exclusively unsold stuff from warehouses, juke box operators etc. All of the stuff that was in circulation, will nodoubt find its way back in circulation. So I bet that it is a case of being lucky. Get there and check 'em out. Thrift stores, the whole works. Incidentally I will post the address of a great little stash of many 1000 mint soul 45's, all $1 @. 90% are post '70. As my knowledge ends at exactly midnite 31/12/69, all of the stuff could well have been from Mars as far as I was concerned. I will give details within 24 hrs.

Keith.

Better take a look, the word is... those Martian pressings could be very collectable soon.

Hi Ritchie The place in question is in Camden NJ, right across the river from Philly. I did have a business card from the owner but can't locate it at present. By the end of this posting I'm sure any Philly Forum Surfers may be able to help. Two years ago I went into the only record store on the main steet in Camden, no vinyl on display but my buddy Ian, spotted a few LPs hidden under a counter. After enquiring we were soon taken to a small Cafe at the end of the block owned by the same guy who owns the store, he had an Italian name. We were to meet the `man` in the cafe, as we waited I noticed on the wall some greasy picture frames and on closer inspection they contained PIR gold discs. As the anticipatation mounted I should have taken closer note of the photo in one frame of Val Shively (I'd recognise that dude anywhere) shaking hands with mine host. Anyway, the manager arrived and took us upstairs in the cafe (I keep saying cafe 'cos I live in swanky Kent but stateside it would be a diner) and lo and behold there they were 1000's of 45s, mainly in 100 count boxes, unopened. After about one hour we realised that Val had obviously trawled the lot and removed 90%, all the stuff pre 1970. Anyhow, we did pull out some stuff. There were definitely still 100 count boxes of Motown demos. Camden's town centre is tiny, a one horse St and the music store is smack in the middle of it, opposite a shoe store. The cafe is on the corner. Ask in the music store if you can look in the attic above the diner. The record store was apparently a big hitter in the 60's and the owner was something to do with Tom Bell, Leon Huff, PIR etc. in the attic there was a stash of gold discs, Love Train among them, but they wouldn't let me have it! I was going to mount it like a Merc badge on the bonnet of my old Volvo! Good hunting! They were all $1 @.

YOU never told ME about the Motown demo's.

So you are now OFF my Xmas list! :-(
