those of you who are aware of weldon's collaberation with bill dahl will know the quality of pic that he was taking during the halcyon era.

well, i phoned weldon the other night and had a long and detailed conversation with him and just as bobby eli said, he is a total gentleman.

It is with pleasure therefore that i can announce that weldon has offered to put up some pics for inclusion on soulfuldetroit. this unselfish act came about without any prompting from myself.

it was a real pleasure talking to him and i would again like to thank mr phillysoulman for bringing someone of such stature onto the forum.

motown the golden years is a 'must have' book. for more exciting photos, please stay tuned to soulfuldetroit.

I firsr met Weldon one day whilst waiting for a bus after school. I was carrying my guitar and this all imposing Black man in a long automobile pulls up and he rolls down his window and proceeds to ask" Hey man, can you play that thing"? SoI replied,"some say that I can"
Then he said" I am on my way to the studio to do a session and I would like to try you out"
" Session,I thought. Try me out"? My mom always warned me about men trying to pick up young boys and I thought that these were sexual inuendos!!!
So I reluctantly got into his car and we proceeded down Broad street towards Virtue studios,
at 1618 north Broad street which was above a clock repair shop. We went up a seemingly never ending flight of stairs, The first thing I saw was an old man siting in a chair who I later found out ws Frank Virtue's father.
We went into the studio and there was a drummer named "Slim" and Luther Randolph and Johnny Stiles, later joined by Ronnie Baker.
Over in the corner were four attractive black girls harmonizing " Talk about this, talk about that uh huh" They were called the Tiffanys, I was told. Through the control room glass was a middle aged Italian man with a jet black toupee and an obvious gun handle at his side. He was Frank Virtue, the engineer and studio owner.
I proceeded to take my guitar out of it's case and tuned it up and followed the directions that were given by Weldon, and throwing in some of my stuff for god measure. I must have passed the test, for I have been a part of the woodwork ever since, and a dear long lasting friendship with Weldon Arthur Mcdougal the 3rd was established!!!!

A lot of people don't know this but Weldon was the co-inventor of a musical gadget called the "Cromulizer" (sp) It was a wind instrument that had a sort of clarinetty bagpipey kind of sound and he produced a song called " Crom-u-funk" on a girls group containing Dalia Smythe who used to be with "Slick" and Fat Larry"
Rare indeed!!

Mr. McDougal,

I just want to congratulate you on your wonderful book, "Motown, The Golden Years"
I keep going back to it and re- reading all of the great stories and the biographical documentation of a genre that was coming to fruition practically in my very own back yard during my childhood, and not having been aware of this phenomenon at the time of my youth, I relish the fact that the time was taken to preserve a part of musical history for our future generations to enjoy.
the photographs are priceless and we finally can see some of these people as they really were.
Once again, thank you Mr. McDougal for bringing joy in my life with your book.

Sue

Mr McDougal 3rd

I have a record in my collection called:
I wanna be - The Pretenders written by W.Lovett
the 'b' side is: Bird Walkin' by (exactly as it says on the label with spelling mistake): THT EMANON'S ORCHESTRA, written by J C Hill/J Stiles. That is a strange name for an orchestra. If you read it backwards it is:NONAME!!

Both songs say 'Mary Hill-Harthon BMI and the record label is ALL BROTHERS

Are you connected with this record?? Does anybody else know about this record?

Am loving the book, by the way.

why do we always spot things which may be spelled back to front?

another northern soul phenomenon.

i have some pretenders tracks on a kent cd. i recall mr lovett's name. their work was excellent.

Carl, Contact Dave Brown at Philly Archives.
He is always in contact with Sonny Hopson the 60's radio DJ who owned All Brothers. I see him from time to time as well. He also has an internet show and I will get the info.
Emanons were a Philly group who did the bar circuit. They had a local hit called One Heart.

There's a vocal to this that has been played on the northern soul circuit for the last few years - called 'World Of Happiness' by, I think, Anne Robinson (not the TV one gladly) but I think it's one of these never released tracks!

Whilst the name Anne Robinson is the one which was used on the CD release, there is no confirmation that she is actually the singer, I understand that the actual singer has never been identified.

Andy Rix will be able to shed more light on this.

Weldon A. Mc Dougal III here, let me tell you guys how Harthon records used to record, we did the track "World Of Happiness", the way we would find new artest, we would give them a track and tell them to learn the song and come back, some time we would have more then one person do the same song\ track. When Andy Rix asked me who was the singer, I told him I don't no because of the way we did things. After recording them for one reason or other sometime thay would not come back,so it's hard to say who that is.

Thanks Weldon! I guess there's lots more unreleased stuff like 'World Of Happiness' out there! It's a wonderful track - please let us hear more!

Dave, I think Cindy Scott was tentatively mentioned/guessed as well. Whoever, it's still a great track! By the way, I saw your flyer for 'Scenesville' at Burnley Cricket Club - Burnley's Lost Souls. Fantastic, it's almost a collectors item!

I spoke to Weldon today and he apologises for not being on the forum much recently as he is mourning the passing of his mother and tying up lose ends relative to the situation. He will return soon!!
