Does any one know if a Liz Lands album was ever issued? I used to love " Keep Me " with the Tempts doing the backing vocals. I found it in a cutout bin in Philly a long time ago. Were there many more singles?

Can I add this......

Liz did enough to fill an album and more of jazz standards..one of which came out on Motown Sings Sinatra.

A lady with one hell of a voice......she can be heard on the flip side to Mary Wells' My Guy...the song Oh Little Boy (What Did You Do To me)...listen to that soaring vocal at the end..that's Liz Lands...as we say here in London, they don't make 'em like that anymore!!

Hi Bobby,

I've seen a listing for an album on Mercury,
can't recall the title, from the late '50's.

I'll let you know if I can find out any more.

It might be a sort of folk/gospel release as
I get the impression she was involved in that
field - a bit like Odetta.

Here's a few more

Divinity 99008 (1963)
Trouble in the land / We shall overcome
(this is Motown's short-lived gospel label)

T&L 1002 ( 1968 ?)
Cotton Fields / Let it be me

An odd looking pair it they're the songs I'm
thinking of

the other T&L single is supposedly from '67
possibly her own label - Lands being the L in T&L

Bobby,

Forgot to mention that "Midnight Johnny" is on
CD - "Motown Year By Year :1964 " this is the CD
that includes The Serenaders "If Your Heart Says
Yes" which we talked about a few weeks ago,

I was surprised to see that this CD came out
in 1995 - where does the time go !

Check out www.soulsearchingplus.co.uk

Jim Stewart's site is probably the best source for Motown CDs - a guy who knows his stuff!

You're such a name-dropper (as I said to Bill Gates only this morning!)

Sorry..but people don't always give Harry his dues......he has a heart of gold particularly when it comes to the artists and musicians themselves.

..plus, it's HIS kind of music and that helps!

Sorry, John - I just couldn't resist the joke ;o)
I'm sure Harry is a great guy, and he certainly deserves the roses for his intelligent and creative handling of the Motown back-catalogue.
Those of us who don't move in such elevated circles as your good self have had to make do with the interview with Harry in the current ish of Chatbusters. In this, he stated that he'd been given the thumbs-up for his work on repackaging the arcives, by no less than BG. If that's not a serious endorsement of the man, I don't know what is!

Harry not only got a pat on the back from BG...he actually met him too..AND had his picture taken with him ....

That might be the only time Harry wore a suit. LOL.....naaah, only joking..

Harry is very down to earth.......last week I had company and when Harry phoned - he says - let me talk to them!! I hardly got a word in once Rixy got on the dog and bone!

There ain't no flies on our Harry, that's for sure...a definite one of the lads

Will the more uptempo version of "Midnight Johnny" ever see an official release......it's been floating around on acetate for years now!
By the way, just how many octave ranges could Liz cover?

I just thought you might like to know that I never saw Berry Gordy Jr. more obsessed with the beauty of any recorded song then he was equally with "Keep Me" and "We Shall Overcome" sung by Liz Lands.

Take my word for it: Liz Lands artistry just blew him away!

The Originals do a fine rendering of "Keep Me"....but as you say, Liz took the biscuit!

Mike - what a pity that BG didn't put Liz's recordings out on wax for us all to enjoy

Her Midnight Johnny (with the Temps) is a classic!

John,

At the time (about 1963) Motown was having trouble making ends meet. The huge profits that came later with the string of Supremes hits were two years in the future.

I remember having a conversation with Mike Ossman, the brother of Raynoma Singleton (the former Mrs. Berry Gordy Jr.) out in front of the Hitsville building at about that time (1963.) We were discussing the financial difficulties of Motown, and he remarked: "What we need is a SUPER-STAR, like Chubby Checker!"

For years after, I would kid him about that line, after Motown flowered with success.

I think what happened to Liz Lands is summed up by saying "Beautiful art and a buck and a half will get you a cup of coffee."

I don't remember "Midnight Johnny."

Just to like to add to the discography:

I can hear the echo / Qualify for my love

Sorry - can't supply label info. Anyone know? Someone made me a tape of this single, T&L 1002 and OneDerFul 4847 a few years ago, didn't give me info on this one though.

Also, there's a track on one the Girls, girls girls CDs by "Elisabeth Lands" called "Walk softly children" - certainly soundslike our Ms Lands. Anyone know anything about this one?
