Does anybody know of a Motown (?) LP with lots of tracks, maybe 50 or more, that is a sampler album for the Jobete songbook?

"The Songs Of Holland-Dozier-Holland" Jobete Music Company, Inc. Pro #4 1974, 70 samplers.

There were even albums allocated to Pam Sawyer, Frank Wilson, Johnny Bristol etc but I never saw anything similar for Hank Cosby :-(

There was an album called "Yesterday, today and tomorrow" which had old songs redone in a 70's "Disco-ey" style plus new songs. It was three LPs with full length cuts. I think it was prob. H-D-H showcase. I had a few in 80's but got rid of them. Sterling Harrison and Margo Michaels[Think that's her name-she had an album on Atlantic in 70's] were two of the acts. Worth picking up if you see it as there are a handful of nice cuts on it.

Thanks for the replies.
Are the original hit artists singing on the H-D-H album?
And do the Smokey, Nick & Val and Stevie LPs have songs written by them, not performed by them?
| |
there is also a Marvin Gaye LP

Re. H-D-H LP
No, they weren't. Lp is late-ish 70's so I'd guess it was after Invictus/Music Merchant had folded. Dont think it was a commercial release either.

Tony B
Imagine listening to the Supremes with "Nothing But Heartaches" for about a minute and then immediately in comes Martha singing "Nowhere to run" and so on. There are about 6 original songs in each group and each group looks like one track of a vinyl album. It tends to go in alphabetical order..so on the Top Ten Story In Sound the last track consists of "You Keep Me Hangin On", You Can't Hurry Love" and "You Lost The Sweetest Boy"
I am sure Lars can grace us with a sleeve. The Smokey edition that I have is called "Smokey The Writer" and it has a nice different non-generic sleeve with a picture.

RODS- It was called Yesterday, Today and FOREVER.
I just ntoiced that Smokey The Writer is a different Jobete Sampler to the Songs of Smokey Robinson.
There was a sampler issued in the UK too

Tony B - Yes, the original hit artists are singing on the HDH album. These are samplers of the original releases. Here is a copy of the label and cover.

…then part of the backside:
I’ll post the mixed Jobete sampler in a few moments.

Tony B,
I think this is the album you are referring to in your first question.
First the label:
…then part of the frontside:
…then part of the backside:
It is a double-LP with 109 Jobete songs. It was “released” 1980.

Well done Lars.....we can always rely on you!
Must be nearly time for you to start to add audio clips soon!!

John,
Funny you should ask. I have just connected my record player to my computer! I have done some tests. Sounds great... Only problem is to compress the MP3-files to 50k so I can upload them here!!! (:-) The files are between 2 – 3 Mb! Maybe we can create a Soulful Detroit MP3 sound bank here? What do you say David?
