A guy I know sent me a CD of song fragments that he taped (on a children's tape recorder) off of WCHB and Swingin' Time when he was a kid in the late '60s and early '70s. I was able to ID a few for him (pretty obscure stuff, like Barbara Jean and the Lyrics), but four songs have me stymied, and I've received no help on soul lists where I've posted them. Here is a description and some lyrics from each, though the sound is so bad that I may have gotten a few words wrong. Any help is much appreciated:

1. Very Motown-style, intense, like late '60s Four Tops (though it's not them). Uptempo, full production, strong male lead, Andantes-like bg vocals, really a great, high-rent sound. Lyrics:
Let's put two together and don't let 'em part
Just put your hand in mine baby...

2. Strong funky groove, major-league funk guitar workout, backing vocalists repeating each line
What a precious moment as you said you cared about me
Out of my heart--that lonely feeling's gone baby
Now I got someone who cares for me
CHORUS
I got a heart, you got a heart
by the lead singer. Quite slick, maybe '70 or '71? Lyrics:

Gonna call you up and say how I feel
Gotta let you know that love is real
I been wantin' to call you up for a long time
Gotta let you know that your love is mine

(There's also some more about the telephone--something about "be able to take that call, I'm in love with you and that ain't all)

3. Powerful churchy ballad by a male deep soul duo, trading lead vocals. Sounds mid-60s though may be later. Another very high quality song. Lyrics:

Forget about your old love
Think of me now
And don't leave me strung out
Not knowing where, when, or how

Last night when I loved you
You gave me such a thrill
But you kept... (not sure what follows, but it sounds like she may have called him by her former boyfriend's name or something)

CHORUS
Forget, forget, forget...

4. Raucous, way uptempo hard soul song, male lead, lots of horns, female bg vocals, sounds mid-to late-60s. Lyrics:

Better get your yo-yo
Wind it up and let it go
Loop de loop de loop de li
Ever since you caught my eye

I'm your puppet on a string
I don't mind 'cause everything's
funky, funky,
I'll do anything that you want me
Like a kid in a candy store
Each time I see you I want more
Sugar I'm a hog for you
Just can't get enough it's true

That's it. I must say, all four songs are great examples of their types. All thoughts and guesses welcome.

Aaargh! Somehow when I was reviewing my note before posting I accidentally deleted a bunch of lyrics to song #1, the Motownish thing. Here they are:

What a precious moment as you said you cared about me
Out of my heart--that lonely feeling's gone baby
Now that I got someone who cares for me

CHORUS
I got a heart, you got a heart
Let's put two together and don't let 'em part
If you just put your hand in mine baby...

Oh, now I see what I did--somehow I moved the lyrics to Song #1 into the middle of my description of Song #2. For God's sake, all this work transcribing lyrics and I've made the whole thing unintelligible! Okay, here's the lyrics to #2 (the funky guitar workout) without the intrusion from Song #1:

Gonna call you up and say how I feel
Gotta let you know that love is real
I been wantin' to call you up for a long long time
Gotta let you know your love is mine
(Then there's the stuff about "be able to take that call, I'm in love with you and that ain't all")

Sorry for all the confusion--very embarrassing.

You're telling me, and what WAS THAT all about???

Because of the words in the second line of song #2, I wonder if it might be "A Love That's Real" by The Intruders from late 1967 on Gamble. It was a pretty big hit in Detroit, but only made it up to #82 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Thanks for helping Joe with this. Anyone else?

Bigjime, thanks for the help! I actually may have that single lurking around somewhere in my collection--I'll find it and let you know if it's the one.
