Tradenames in songs have posed something of a problem for BBC radio over the years. The Playmates' BEEP BEEP was excluded from the airwaves as it referred to a "Cadillac" and a "Nash Rambler", which the BBC saw as a blatant advert - disregarding the fact that neither car was available to buy in the UK. When the group re-recorded the song , substituting the words "limousine" and "bubble car", it was deemed acceptable.

The Kinks' LOLA was refused airtime, as it mentioned "Coca Cola". A revised version - "cherry cola" was offered.

Dr Hook & the Medicine Show fell foul of the BBC's horror of advertising with Shel Silverstein's COVER OF THE ROLLING STONE. Dennis and co recut the song in a special BBC version as COVER OF THE RADIO TIMES (a BBC-published weekly programme listing). The record was still rejected as it "advertised a magazine"!

Ritchie, if only we could have been so lucky to have had "Beep Beep" banned on these shores for the same (or any) reason. Errggh-o-mighty!

I was thinking of "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing", along with "No Mater What Shape", but what came up in my addled mind was "Things Go Better With Coke".
Saw the American Breed once, and they did the spot in concert. I think Rhino has a CD of the Coke commercials. Any R&B acts do one?

Top of pageBottom of page   By 1wicked (66.80.176.194) on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 12:44 pm:

Nah Douglasm...during that time they sang "It's the real thing....what the world wants today."

Doug:
I have a CD of Coca Cola & Pepsi jingles from the 1960s through the 1980s. The Friends of Distinction, Bobby Bloom, Blood Sweat & Tears and Three Dog Night each cut a radio spot for Pepsi using the lyric "you've got a reason to live & Pepsi has a lot to give.." while the Supremes, the Brooklyn Bridge & Otis Redding each did a 90 second (!) spot using "Things Go Better With Coca-Cola..."

By the way, the Coca-Cola jingle that used "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" was a collaboration between UK songwriting legends Roger Cook & Roger Greenway and the great Roquel Billy Davis, who at that time was the head jingle-master at McCann-Ericson Advertising.

My fave Pepsi commercial was Martha & the Vandellas "Come Alive, You're in the Pepsi Generation" kinda like "Wild One".The commercial track musta been a Stevenson/Hunter production.

Kentucky Fried Chicken are using classic northern soul songs on their British TV adds as we speek.
Do I Love You/Frank Wilson, and
I Can't Get Away/Bobby Garrett, or is it Bob and Earl?

Kevgo...WRT the Coke jingle, did the song or the jingle come first ? Or was the jingle based on an unreleased (at that time) song ?

The insurance(I think)advert that has
the intro to
Sam Fletchers-I'd Think It Over.
The cat food advert that had the stomping Rubin's dancer 'you've been away'on it.
And the ones SoulieDave mentions above.

There were also ads for the '60s product Great Shakes, in which the artists sang the jingle in melodies similar to their hit songs!

I've heard Dusty Springfield's jingle (sounding remarkably like "I Only Want to Be With You") and the Yardbirds' jingle (similar to "Over, Under, Sideways, Down"). There were a few more I heard (the local oldies station had a "jingle weekend" where they played quite a few of these puppies.

Best,

Mark

As a dedicated VW fan I'll throw into the hat this one from Johnny Cymbal called, "Go VW go!" with the following lyric:

Go VW go!
There's this kid that lives on my block now,
He just bought a GTO Super-stock now.
He's a real nut when it comes to draggin',
He's always making fine of my little Volkswagen.

Go Volkswagen go! (I don't believe it)
Go Volkswagen go! (It can't do it)
Go Volkswagen, go VW go!

The chicks all dig him 'cause his car's a gas,
They say there's nothing on the road he can't pass.
Well I'm sick and tired of all of this braggin',
I told them I'd drag him with my little Volkswagen!

Go Volkswagen go! (I don't believe it)
Go Volkswagen go! (It can't do it)
Go Volkswagen, go VW go!

Now I don't know much about custom machines,
But I do something a lot about gasoline,
'Cause I'm a straight-A student in chemistry class,
I've just invented a gas of a gas...

Love it! :-)
