On Tuesday, August 17th, for the first time in over 20 years, Janice Marie Johnson & Hazel Payne shared the stage again as A Taste Of Honey. And as we all know, A Taste Of Honey always tastes sweet. I found them to be two very down-to-earth women & very friendly. They have a wonderful stage presence & in retrospect, I find it incredible that they've been been apart for so long, as they have great chemistry. It was very nice meeting & speaking with them. The girls are in very good hands: Hazel has her loyal MGR & sidekick, John Steele, who is quite humerous & quick with a smile. Janice has her Musical Director, the great Felton Pilate of Con Funk Shun & her son, who is one very nice, well-mannered young man. Hazel has some committments to fill for the next 4 months. After which, I hope that Janice & Hazel will be back together, gracing the stage & our airwaves for many years to come!!!

Juice, you really captured the moment in these pictures. They look like they were having a good time. Are you sure this is 2004 and not 1978 because time has been good to them!!!! I was listening to them at work on Tues. Do It Good is still a bad jam!! |

They are right about the pictures.. they are just as beautiful as ever, how do i know? i had the pleasure of breaking their album on capitol records. i was the national mktg mgr.and disco director for capitol at the time. i've got some great stories about their success and a heart breaking one about me when the won their grammy for "boogie-oogie-oogie".I still get teary-eyed when i think about what my boss the v.p. of mktg. did to me with my tickets to the grammy's. |

ok, i'll get it off my chest. at capitol the r&b division had six weeks to get records played or they were no longer priorities as we were getting an average of 5-8 singles released per week and sometimes 3-4 new lp's. well the six weeks had passed for boogie-oogie-oogie and radio play was just not happening on the major mkt r&b stations yet, so on our weekly conference call we were told by our national guy t.o.h. was no longer a priority. well i had met janice and hazel at one of our press parties and was "very" impressed with the ladies. i invited them to my home and the wife cooked a very nice dinner for them and also liked their personalities. I had just decame national disco director and had a promotional budget to work with. I was based on the west coast and my good friend and collegue "Rusty moody' was based on the East coast in New York. We had the two largest Disco markets in the country so.. well the rest is history. i'll cut to the chase. The Ladies were nominated for grammy's due to Rusty and I going back on their SINGLE "BOOGIE-OOGIE-OOGIE" and made it a huge Disco success which then crossed over into radio.Dennis white my (my boss the V.P. of mktg.) patted me on the back and gave me two tickets to the Grammy's. I felt great because they were "EXCELLENT" seats, 12 rows back from the stage, center section. well we just hired Cecil Hale as v.p.of A&R to replace Larkin Arnold. Dennis asked to see my tickets looked at them and gave me a different pair. .....they were "SECOND TO THE "LAST ROW" IN THE "BALCONY" AND 3 SEATS OVER FROM THE WALL!!!everyone on stage looked like ants. When the ladies won,,...I "CRIED LIKE A BABY" talk about the feeling of ultimate betrayal!!! I'll Never forget that one. |

Thank you S.S., Re Re & Jim Jim: God bless you! I cut my DJ teeth back in April 1978 with Boogie Oogie Oogie. I still have my original 45, date & all. These very nice ladies bring back some good memories. I also wasn't aware that Janice is an Native American Indian. I'm glad that you helped break that song. It was really something different ack in '78. Janice & hazel paved the way for groups like Klymaxx. When the two of them came out in '78 playing their guitars, it blew peoples' minds. That was a rare sight back then. Re Re: Yes, Do It Good was my jam in 1979. I also loved their slow jam "If We Loved". I loved these girls & it was an honor to meet them. I hope that they'll do more appearances together. But, they must perform Sayonara & Diamond Real |

I also have to add, it was a great time promoting the ladies in the LARGEST disco club scenes in LA,SAN FRANCISCO, NEW YORK, DETROIT,PHIILY. Those were the day's when we had nice expense budgets to do everything "First Class". They are two of the "CLASSIEST" Ladies you'll ever meet...One funny memory was when Rusty had the Ladies in New York Doing the Promo Club scenes and Larkin Arnold was with them. Rusty took every body to Studio 54. They got out of the Limo, went to the Head of the line and the door guy let everyone in EXCEPT LARKIN!!! . He ended up waiting in the Limo for a while before they realized he didn't get in....."Toooo Funny"!!!! |

Hey Jim, Thats quite a sad story, geez! I remember meeting you several times. Once in LA thru larkin at a party for peabo, and then in Philly at a "disco convention" party thru Rocky G, at the Second Story. |

Hi Jim, I was writing my post while you were posting your Grammy story. That really sucked & they should have been slapped upside the head with the trophy. Not the girls, the suits. I'm happy to be able to say that the girls are still a class act & still have the same nice personalities that you speak of. They would be welcome as friends, they're very unassuming ladies & you can see it reflected in the manners of Janices' son. These ladies have class in spades!!! |

Eli, Back in the day i met a lot of extremely nice people, i'm sure if i saw you again i'd remember you. I would truly like to see the Ladies again, they are definately "Eye Candy". I'm jealous of my boy Spyder, he had the pleasure of kickin it with Janice not long ago.I think she was doing a studio project. I'll have to ask Spyder what she was doing. |

Hey Juice!!! GREAT shots!! I loved Taste of Honey!! I have every album! When I use to work for the Governor of California back in 1987, I had a coworker who had friends who knew Janice, and she always said she was such a sweet heart, very down to earth. |

Excellent post! It's good to see my girls are doing well. I still remember the first Monday after school was out for the summer in 1978. My apartment complex's pool finally opened. Somebody brought a radio and "Boogie Oogie Oogie" was the first song to blast. Instant party!! I remember that like it was yesterday, and that was elementary school. |

Thanks Jrlo Lest anyone think that I forgot the lovely ladies of A Taste Of Honey, rest assured that I haven't. I have to redo all of their pictures. I recorded their video using a USB capture box. he picture is just not as sharp as a direct AV link, which keeps everything digital. SOOOOO.....I had to re-capture all 10 minutes of the video digitally, as I was getting the pictures from my video. All of the pictures that I ripped were not sharp & the quality was grainy. So, I'm in the process of re-ripping the pictures again & it's a frame by frame process. It's also a pain in the butt, re-doing all of that hard work. But, the results are well worth it!! With that in mind, heres a couple of REVITALIZED shots of two very nice, sweet ladies:

Hey Re Re, Sorry for not answering you back here, it's been a little hectic. The thing about it is that it's a labor of love. It's gratifying to see our "Honeys" together on stage again. I had the good fortune of speaking with Ms Johnson last evening. She saw this thread & is looking forward to joining us here, as soon as her busy schedule allows. She's still a class act! |
