So tell me, when are they planning to come to the New York Metro area? I've heard so many different accounts & I'd like to see them for myself. I just saw William & the fellas at The Beacon & they did well. I'd like to afford the same courtesy to Wilbert. Either way, I wish success for all!

As a matter of fact, I'd appreciate it if you could email me at juicefree@hotmail.com. I have a question for you & the forum isn't an appropriate place. Thanks.

Hi Fonic Zone,

I remember when your family lived on Gainor rd!
Thats when the neighborhood was nice
No drugs, no guns.
I pass by there frequently and get misty eyed when I ride by Norman's house.
Do you remember mr Billy Leonard who had an oil delivery service and also had a band??
His daughter's name is Karen.

Good morning Mr Eli
Yes I do remember them my dad bought oil from them I also remember going to Mrs Dee Dee Sharp
gamble's house with my dad..She sang a song he wrote and my dad went home and sung the same song and then let Mr Major Harris sing the same song..He went into Sigma Sound Studios and put all three versions on and mixed the tape and that song if he ever release it is a stone cold smash hit...Ms Dee Dee was so shocked to hear it put together like that ..it brought tears to her eyes she has such a beautiful voice and together with my dad and Mr Harris's voice...it was if they were all in the studio together...it really made me realize what a great producer my dad is...a talent he learned from Mr Tommy Bell..and great musicians such as yourself, he used a great engineer at Sigma Sound, and Mr Tarza always loved to come watch my dad doing what he do best make music at Sigma Sound. One thing I loved was being able to go with my dad and watch him produce his music at Sigma..It always made me feel good and proud of him..He will be talking with you on your email site..very soon. Mr Juice I will forward the pictures to you, and I know You will enjoy them...We appreciate your help..Danita

Hi Fonic Zone: I'm Nosey (female) from Philly and I have such wonderful memories of house parties dancing to the Delphonics music. I distinctly remember when "Break Your Promise" (I hope that's the right title) was first being played at parties and dances and how that distinctive opening would get us out of our seats looking for a dance partner. Great songs and a great group.

Dear Bobby,
My dad tried to reach you by email...he will be writing you soon..My uncle lived next door to Dee Dee and Mr Gamble on 51st and Wynnefield Ave...We were all up on the hill and living so close to one another...times was good, and everything was peaceful back then...Brothers was tight...love for one another...believe me it is still there...the love for one another...family will be family...but business is business and sometimes it can destroy family if you let it...however, we have love in heart for family...we always will no matter what...we were raised to love one another by my mom and dad...I must say, they really in stilled the sense of family, and love for one another in all of us nine children..that is the one thing my mom and dad demand, that we be family no matter what...love your family...no matter what...remember where you came from...and move on...forgive, but never forget...God is Great

Hey D,

I've had to adopt that same look for myself, so it's all good to me. Yes, those big hats were something. I was a little too young for those, but it brings back some fond memories :-)

Thanks for the correct identification!

you got that right...but as someone on the thread said before , these was the street clothes man...they were authenic..their dress on and off stage was classic fonic style...original..I remember my dad shopping in Paris and Germany for Leather outfits, shoes and bags, getting their uniforms and capes custom made tailored to fit..

Mr Eli
I know you remember the way they dressed on and off stage...My dad drove that big Silver Cloud Bently and our tag was 7777 and the steering wheel was on the other side...he had a chauffeur but he would drive it himself and the cops always pulled us over, saying he was too young to drive a car like that...remember ...those were the days

Now, here's some rare gems coming up! This was Wil Hart's Delfonics featuring William Hart, performing as a QUARTET!!! When's the last time you saw pictures like these:

1
2
3

This was the brothers & the quartets last performance together. This was in 1992 at The Peppermint Lounge in Newark, N.J. Imagine the original 3 of William, Wilbert, Randy with Major!!!

Right on, right on for the rareness!!! Someway, Someday, Somehow, we MUST see this quartet perform again before we meet our Maker!!! We have to!!

Thanks you Tony for your kind words..I am glad you liked the pixx...For those of you who don't know...The Delfonics had 14 hits back to back on the Charts and voted best R and B performance group in 1970 for Did'n I blow your mind...First R and B group out of Philadelphia to win a Grammy back then...that was quite an honor, today anything gets a grammy seems like to me you don't even have to be able to sing...to win one...back then that was so very important, being able to really sing harmony and make real music with live instruments...having a big session with the Philadelphia Musicians great strings by Don Rinaldo and Vince Montana...I think I got the names right..Mr Eli, Mr Norman Harris, Mr Earl Young, Micheal Forman, Tony Bell, Fat Larry, Karl Chambers, Roland Chambers, great studios in Philadelphia...S i g m a....S o u n d..Joe Tarsa

Oh wow, how GOOD is all this info!

Last year, during a bit of a sleepless night, my local radio station played "la la means I love you" and I just melted into my pillow. I hadn't heard it for SO long.

The next day I rushed over to HMV record store and searched through the CDs until I found it. I play it at home, in the car, while working out at the gym. Everywhere.

This is such great news. And all the pics. Awesome.

Thank you so much.:-)

Childhood friends of mine played in your band, Curtis and Jesse Davis, are they still touring with you? And "Hey Love" is also my favorite Delfonics song. Looking forward to the new material.

I was born in '60....NO, not 1860, although it sure feels that way sometimes :-) Actually, I didn't discover Honey & The Bees until the late '90s. The airwaves here were so full of James, Otis, Johnnie, Sam & Dave, Motown, Aretha, Peaches & Herb, The Intruders, Joe Tex & Pickett, that didn't leave a lot of room for the girls. I discovered them after the CD revolution, when the companies started reissuing these Soul classics.

I never knew that your father did those additional songs. That adds a new insight to this thread.

David: Thanks for the shots. I never saw that Apollo photo before!

Soul Sister: Thank you for the kind words. Hey, how could I resist aiding with classic Soul & the history of one of my favorite all-time groups?

Danita: I'll never forget the night of the accident at Wingate High. I was planning to go to that show with a couple of Delfonics LPs to see if I could get them signed. I always liked Curtis, but I was a Delfonics fan since I was 8. Then, too, I always loved the ballad Follow Every Dream & had read that The Delfonics were once supposed to sign a contract with Curtom, which never happened. My intention was to try to meet the fellas & ask them about that & what things were like when they started.

Unfortunately, it poured that night, I mean it POURED. I forgot about the idea of going to the concert & was shocked when a co-worker came to work after the concert & told me what had happened. Regardless, I always dug The Delfonics & I always will think back fondly on those days of my childhood.

Hi Fonic Zone. It seems I remember two Cain brothers in the group originally. I remember one getting in trouble very young and had to go to jail and even though their father was a judge he still had to go. Am I right or am I having hallucinations. Not trying to start nothing just checking to see if my memory is intact. LOL!

Do you know what Randy Cain is doing these days?

Fonic_zone,

I'm very interested in your story, and would like to know more about it. I have an interest in artist royalties and how they get cheated or sign away there rights to that income, also I always wondered what happened to the Delfonics. This thread may not be the place for that so you could contact me at Benton55@aol.com Thanks

Randy had a brother named Jerry and he played the drums for my dad's group first, then the Intruders..he was a great drummer out of Philly..and yes he did get into trouble and go to jail did his time and came out got married and became a probation officer before he died...Yes, I remember the show at Wingate field, my dad had a friend that lived across from there and they invited our whole family to their house and we had a big dinner before the show...then my dad and the group went across to the field, they were suppose to on instead of Mr Curtis, but seeing the storm was coming Mr Mayfield asked my dad to let him go on next and we stood at the back of the stage, I watched the whole thing , as the tree lights began swaying from side to side a terrible gust of wind blew them down across the stage, my mom was sitting in a chair and my brother pushed her out of the way just as the whole stage began falling down...the chair my mom was sitting in was flattened to the ground, everyone was shouting and crying and my mom was hysterical about what had just happened to the chair she was sitting in, then we looked for my dad he was still in the trailer getting his group ready for the show, we ran and told him to come help something terrible happened to Mr Curtis and his drummer, my God , His drummer was knocked off his stool and I think his head or neck was cut...bad...they rushed us across the field to my dad's friends' house while all the groups went to the hospital...That is one night I will always remember as a child, it frightened me to death..

About that Curtom deal...that was one of the deals my uncle messed up...we also had deals with Don King and the Jackson 5 Tour, he messed that one up too, Jim Brown wanted to manage our group, my uncle messed that one up too, so did Sammy Davis Jr want to manage our group...so many people wanted to manage the Delfonics...My dad's group was big...I remember them opening up for the Beatles at the Paladium in London...years ago before the Beatles came to America...it was a show set up by Long John Wade..from wibg-fm...I remember the Delfonics heading a show with Kool N The Gang, before Celebration...came out ...this show was also at the Apollo...I remember, The Four Tops , The Temptations, and the Delfonics Show great show...it was...Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, Nj..The children spent the night at Muhammad Ali's house, while Mom and Sister Belinda Ali went to the Latin with our dad's group..Sister Arena babysitted the Ali children and us...good memories, good times...I remember my dad and Muhammad Ali drag racing the rolls royce and the Bentley on the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, trying to get to the Latin in time for the show...with Major Cox following in his Rolls...they dropped us off and met our moms at the show...big fun...big fun...good times at the Latin Casino...

Danita,

It's great to hear your experiences. You give a fresh perspective to what those days were like. It sounds as though you had the time of your life. Thanks for bring a new insight to what those days were like.

And yes, The Delfonics were HUGE! They were extremely popular in my neck of the woods & man, if they could have found another producer like Thom Bell & a more attentive label, they could have stayed at the top for many more years. When I think about what could have been....Man. If you can imagine all of those songs that Thom produced on The Spinners, or The Stylistics produced for The Delfonics....WHEW!!!

Well Juice
that is what Mr Bell said when he left...He said the songs he had for the Delfonics , he would make some new Delfonics, and he did...He gave those songs to the Stylistics...all because my uncle would not give him credit for helping to write those songs...my uncle wanted all the credit and my dad even made up the parts of the songs for background vocals and produced them on many of the hits, it was my dad and Tommy in the Studio, my uncle would come in and lay his voice down and leave...so the music was done by Mr Bell and the back ground was made up by my dad..that is why he can reproduce the sound of the Delfonics and my uncle cannot...Tommy taught my dad how to do it...and he pulled my dad out front to lead Didn't I it was Mr Bell that chose who was to lead that song..not my uncle...my uncle wrote some lyrics...that's it...he had the falsetto that's it...the cake was not done with just that...voice...it took two eggs milk butter and sugar to make that cake...

Danita,
If I may call you by your name, what other songs did your dad sing lead on? I find this topic very interesting and I had always wondered why Thom Bell stop working with the guys and started working with the Stylistics and Spinners, as well as your dialogue with Mr. Eli. Do Randy and Major tour with your uncle? I remember in the late 60s and early 70s when the Delfonics would perform in DC. I hated the fact that I was too young to see them perform (at the clubs). Can you believe the first time I saw the group live was in the late 90s, down here in Atlanta. I'm still waiting for their return. Some of my favorite recordings are 'Hey Love', 'When You Get Right Down To It', 'Trying To Make A Fool Of Me', 'I Gave To You','Somebody Loves You','Tell Me This Is A Dream','Don't Throw It All Away' and 'The Delfonics Theme (How Could You)', always played at the parties, great slow jam. The Delfonics were definitely my equivalent to The Supremes, numero uno.

My dad sing lead on several hits by the Delfonics Seventeen and in Love, Pardon Me Girl, Your Name,
Round and Around, I'm a man, When you get right down to it..Hey Love..Didn't I blow your mind..I'll get mine you get yours...It was Tommy Bell that pulled my dad out front, he heard my dad's voice singing lead on several songs...My dad was writing songs and writing background parts for songs, and Mr Bell gave him a shot at it and the rest is history...Some of these songs are on the Delfonics the Professionals, Sexy Soul lp,Don't Leave Me...on kent records...My father was also responsible for placing the backgrounds and harmonies for all the Delfonic songs when and how they should go...also, in the studio he produced along with Tom Bell and William Hart on Delfonic Sessions...

Fonic Zone, it's me again: I used to hang with Major's daughter, her name begins with an "R" and was at the house in Cherry Hill at a party about a week before the murders. I was on the periphery of a lot of what you speak about as I hung with the Overbrook High crowd and have been in the presence of your uncle and father where they have behaved as total gentlemen. Class acts, I must say.

Hi Danita,

How are you today? I'm so glad that Wil is doing fine. You are the best promotion person your dad could have, he's so lucky to have you and your entire family backing him.

I was your neighbor back in the day, I lived at 54th and Woodcrest, and Bobby Eli lived on Lebanon Avenue. I can't wait to hear the new Fonic_Zone release, I know that it will be chock full of wonderful tunes. I remember hearing the first song released, "He don't Really Love You", the sound of the timpani in that song was so beautiful. I'm looking forward to meeting you and your family soon, I know your dad and Bobby will hook up after he is well.

Keep posting, we enjoy hearing about what is happening with Wil Hart and The New Delfonics.:-)

Dear Nosey
Thanks for your suggestion, however, all that is in the process of being changed as we speak..They are finally talking a settlement deal with Arista as we speak so you can purchase from Arista, Amazon who ever you buy your cd's from ...from now on my dad's group will get their royalties...it is being set up right after all these years...Wilbert Hart and Randy Cain will get their royalties...in a settlement meeting taking place as we speak...stay tuned for the new releases tho they will surprise you..My dad is doing tunes with Rick Ross from the dirty south, bringing that fonic flavor to the hip hop nation with class and style...he is also doing things with the group City High...and a new hip hop group out of the Harlem called Melrah....so things are looking up for him and he loves doing what he does...make music...and making people feel good...

Dear Vonnie
Thanks for remembering us on Gainor Road, my dad had 2 sons and me..at that time..now we have 6 more children born over the years and two step brothers we call my dad's road children...we love them too...my mom helped raise them too...so they were blessed to have her just like we are...my dad treated us all the same...taught us to love one another and be there for each other..and that is what we do...just as we were raised...to do...Please give Mr Eli the greeting of Love and Peace from our family...Our prayers are for his safe and healthy return to us all...My dad will be in touch with him in regards to his new projects and perhaps together they can create something so big it will make the world stand up and take notice of that special Phila Sound back on the scene...and loving it...bringing that sound back is what it is all about...the Philly sound, good clean music...with a message...

Juice
I remember meeting Brett Ratner in New York..before he became famous...Before Rush Hour...Mr Ratner was going to college and doing music videos, one day he called my dad and asked him for a favor, he told my dad that Russell Simmons birthday was the day after my dad's and that Russell's favorite group was the Delfonics,,after a long day at work Russell would get in his Limo and turn on the tape of the Delfonics so he could wind down and listen to some Classic R&B...Mr Brett wanted my Dad to bring his Delfonics to New York and surprise Mr Russell Simmons, by performing at his surprise Birthday Party in New York...My Mom and Dad agreed to bring the group there and we went to Mr Ratners penthouse apt in downtown NY...he lived on the top floor..that is where we stayed while they went to the party...It went over very well, Mr Russell was surprised and My dad's group sang all the hits for him...what a birthday that was for Mr Russell Simmons from Def Jam...I think my dad did the party again in Miami Fl the next year..I did not make that one because they had a date in the Virgin Islands the next day, so the kids had to stay home that time...just some more fun memories...

Ahhh Danita,

What a life huh :-)

I'm glad to hear that the settlement is being worked out. I hope that this will help the rift within the group & that some real healing will begin. Life is much too short for strife & perhaps the love from all of those classic songs will rub off & make things right. Tomorrow's promised to no one & it would be sad, should anyone meet their maker, without true resolution in this situation. There has to be a way for this to be healed, there just has to be.

Hopefully this will be the start :-)

On those songs he did sing lead, however, my uncle always stood in the middle...for some strange reason, whenever my dad tried to go to the center to lead if you noticed my uncle would not pass the mike...back then there was no cordless mics...so my dad just sang from his side of the stage the lead ...if you recall, many of the Delfonics Songs were three part harmony kind of songs, everyone had a line to sing..or a couple of lines to sing, but the brothers were always singing lead on the songs...sometimes my uncle would lead songs he wrote, sometimes my dad would lead songs he wrote, and sometimes Mr Bell decided who lead a song...that is what made the group so unique...the sound, the harmonies..etc.and that beautiful orchestration of Mr Bell and the Phila Orchestra and the Phila Musicians...along with the group's spectatular performances vocally and physically on stage and in the studio...that's why when Randy left the group, the brothers continued to do shows just the two of them..they could handle that kind of situation...until my dad trained Mr Major Harris to fill the spot, we used many other people, one in particular was a guy out of Chicago called Bruce...He and his wife Cookie came to live at our house, until Bruce left for greenier Pastures, my uncle did not like anyone around long that could sing his note...he got rid of them quick..then there was Ron Harper from the same group Naturners Rebellion, and finally my dad chose Major, because Major could sing and dance very well...

Hello Fonic,

I am a teacher from Toronto, Canada and I try to do what is best for 'my kids' so here I preach. Juice and a few others here can let you know that 'my kids' have met and/or telephone interviewed so many artists (B.B. King, Gladys Knight, Mavis Staples, Smokey Robinson, current and former Temptations, your uncle and many others)about paving the way for today's artists. A man named Bob from Soul-Patrol e-mailed me and said that we should connect with your Dad - I listened to the concert on his website and it was GREAT!

Would your Dad be willing to talk to some of 'my kids' who are my students?

You can let me know at TimSkinner@Rogers.Com. Feel free to ask other members of SDF if you wish to check on me.

Hi Satipe!!!

Danita, Satipe is doing some great things with the young children of today. He teaches them about the history of our beloved artists such as The Delfonics, The Dells, all of their musical forefathers. He instills the love of that music into youngsters & has artists talk with his students. I think that what he does is great, as it not only teaches these children about their musical past, it introduces these artists to a brand new generation. That helps to keep their legacies alive & perhaps creates a whole new generation of fans & supporters.

Tim does good work & I believe that your father would do well to speak with him :-)

Hi Danita & Soul Sister,

Your kind wishes are greatly appreciated. Mom is doing fine, a little sore, but doing great. Man, she is some kinda woman a trooper like no other. If I can be half the man she is, I'll be proud :-)

Danita has sent along a few more pictures, so here they are in all of their glory!!!

Good morning Juice, Mr Eli
I hope and pray Mr Eli is fine and in good health..I have been away for awhile working on my Masters in Education...getting ready to be a Principal in some school...however, working on those papers is very time consuming...so I am checking in with Soulful Detroit, to see what's up and coming...on the threads...

Hi Danita,

I'm glad you checked in, I was wondering where you were. I'm glad you're taking care of the most important thing that anyone can do, taking care of your education. I'm a firm proponent of education.

Bobby is doing fine, everything is going along very well. He's a real trooper and will soon be up to his normal speed. He will contact your Dad very soon.

Take care and continue making your family proud.:-)
