Tossed off Atlantic
Meanwhile we finished our album for Atlantic Records. We were excited. We had quest appearances by Beat heroes Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso singing on our world class rendition, with Jake Jacobs on sitar, of the Hare Krishna chant.
Atlantic president Jerry Wexler had an idea for the cover shot-- we went to Joel Brodsky's studio-- took pictures. The Village Voice somehow obtained a copy of the cover idea, and our idea for a title, The Fugs Eat It. And ran it.
There was a meeting at Atlantic Records with the owners. We played the album for them. At the end, one of them said, "Good production job, Ed."
A couple of days after the meeting with Atlantic officials, Jerry Wexler called me at home on Avenue A and said they were not going to release the album and we were off the label.
It was a brief, stunning call. It looked like the Fugs career among major labels was over.
Three of the tunes from "Thrown off Atlantic" ("Carpe Diem," "Wide, Wide River," and "Nameless Voices Crying for Kindness") we have included on this compact disk.
Of course "PoPsie" was there when they signed the "BIG" contract at Atlantic. They must have been really special if they got Ahmet Etergun AND Jerry Wexler there to sign them personally.
Ah, to be a fly on the wall at that meeting

Of course Jerry Wexler/Ghastly was double-dipping, flying into Detroit to introduce horror movies on Channel 2 when he wasn't producing Atlantic superstars ...
|By LTLFTC (188.8.131.52) on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 - 12:47 pm:|
I'd never heard of Ghastly, so I googled away and whaddyaknow, there's a website for him. He DOES resemble Wexler. By the way in the above picture it looks like Jerry's trying to back out of the shot...... Bob Denver could play Tuli (if he could get off that island) , but in the more recent photo, Tuli looks like he could play a more sartorially bizarre George Washington. I'd love to see the current Temptations come out dressed like Tuli, steppin' away....

A welcome void?? "Inna Gada Da Vida" is the only song I can play on the bass ...meaning I could take on Froggy AND Stubass on that song alone.
I mean really, it's not the Bo Diddley riff, but all I had to do was hum it (Inna Gada Da Vida) and a 21 year old said "Oh yeah, that was on the Simpsons..." Something about Bart replacing the church music with "Inna Gada Da Vida" ...almost killing the church organist.

"Hey Marge, remember when we used to make out to this hymn?" -- Homer Simpson

That photo reminds me of a fascinating little book I just finished called "Mr. S: My Life With Frank Sinatra" by Walter Jacobs, who was ol' Blue Eyes' valet and right-hand man from the early 50's to 1968. Jacobs' elaborates on what we always knew; that Sinatra absolutely hated rock and roll (Motown included). But the errggh connection here is the one song that Jacobs said sent his boss over the edge one time. He particularly hated the Doors "Light My Fire" and one time while they were riding somewhere and Jimbo & crew were on every station Sinatra punched up, he lost it and kicked in the car radio with the heel of his shoe!

I suppose Ray kind of pounded on the keys of that keyboard bass, so in a sense, the pounding bass. However, couple that with his annoying Farfisa like sounding organ and Morrison's self serving ego and I was ready to settle some scores.
Several years ago when the Doors movie was out, my parents decided to go to the movies one night. They noticed the title The Doors and assumed they were going to see a mystery movie. Boy were they surprised.

Some things just do not age well, one of them is the Doors and a lot of the hippie-era stuff.
I mean, I can listen to "Inna Gadda Da Vida" and have a good warm feeling, but I'm also half laughing. A lot of the music from that scene calcified quickly in the '70s into cliche ...
Today, what sounds better, "Heard it Through The Grapevine" or "Inna Gadda Da Vida"? No contest. The one is a time capsule, quite dated.
p.s. Ralph I saw the "new" Doors on Jay Leon, and Manzarek seemed to have forgotten a bit of the most famous organ solo in rock ..? He's had a few years to practice it ...

Hey, Sue, remember that introduction you wrote to the Creem special issue about the Doors in 1981? I just picked that up, and I thought you did a nice job on that. But one thing that struuck me throughout -- the writing that was expended on them was way better than the music merited! I've never been much of a Doors fan, and I become less of one each day.
I have to say, though, re: Iron Butterfly, that "Inna Gadda Da Vida" isn't the best song on that album, and that that album isn't the best one they made in that period. Both "Ball" and "Heavy" are way better. Although I'm probably revealing too much about myself if I'm going to cop to owning those records.

Ah, the Fraternity Of Man.......
....I have to agree with you on IB's "Ball" LP. "Soul Experience" is really a groovie track.

Next Generation Martin & Lewis to Perform
By Associated Press
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The first time a Martin and a Lewis got together, they became the most famous comedy act of the post-World War II era, before breaking up in 1956.
Now the sons of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis are wondering whether lightning could strike twice.
Ricci Martin and Gary Lewis will perform together for the first time at Buffalo's Italian Heritage Festival in a hastily arranged pairing that both say appealed to them right away.
"I just want to have fun with the whole thing," said Lewis, on tour with his 1960s band the Playboys. "I'm proud of my dad, and I'm sure he's proud of his dad, so why not?"
The two will sing a song together and talk about their fathers after Martin finishes his stage tribute to Dean Martin. Lewis will then take the stage with his band.
Not only will Saturday night's performance be the first time the two perform together, it will be the first time they've ever met. They set up the joint appearance by telephone last week.

I feel very bad about polluting an otherwise fine thread earlier today with a superfluous, frivolous post. However, here at errgggh, superfluous and frivolous would be a significant improvement. Thus, I present the original document that was mistakenly cropped on another thread. Sadly, I lost my notes in a heated game of paper, scissors rock. Although I am not able to precisely match names to faces, I believe that the gentlemen in the photograph are Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, Bela Lugosi and George "Gabby" Hayes.

Stu's right, BFoster...my cousin Larry always said that being in the limelight could transform any idiot into a well-known idiot!
And well-known idiots often achieve high political office! Remember Ronnie Reagan?
More deserving well-known people achieve political office too. Just look at Bela Lugosi, who became Governor of Transylvania...or was it Spottsylvania? Pennsylvania?
Actually, Mr Lugosi once appeared on Larry's show as a surprise Halloween guest! It was before Larry got to be really famous and was syndicated. He tried to bite Kathy Lennon's neck, but she had a high collar on, so he went for the most visible part of her anatomy!
