Yoyoshep -
You listed the Johnny Mathis LP "Mathis Is. Are you familiar with it?" I just posted a question on the "I'm Coming Home" thread asking for a comparison between it and the "I'm Coming Home" LP....Have you heard both?? Any comments on them, comparatively???
By yoyoshep (205.188.209.109) on Thursday, July 03, 2003 - 05:16 pm: |
To Motownboy, the I'm Coming Home album is just a straight classic. It is an album beyond compairing with anything else. The song selection, arrangements, production, and performances are top drawer. A true journey of beauty. The Mathis Is album has some nice material on it with the usual beautiful Bell arrangements; " Lulaby Of Love" and I Don't Want To Say No" are standouts. I once read a interview wiyh Thom Bell from a 1975 Record World article in which he expressed his thoughts on the I'm Coming Home album and if he produced another album on Johnny Mathis; "..I'll never do a better album than that, but I'll give you the equal of the songs and the production. I don't feel I could ever do a better album than that. I could give you the same calibre of songs, same calibre of arranging, and Mathis will give the same calibre of voice, which is the best. But I'll never. ever do a better album than that on Johnny Mathis." Record World March 1975.

I received my copy of "I'm Coming Home" in today's mail. I like it, the sound is awesome. They list the recording and release dates and the singles catalog numbers, but they screwed up "Life Is A Song Worth Singing" by giving it the same catalog number and release date as "I'm Coming Home". Somehow, labels always seem to muck up something of this sort. I'm going to contact Legacy and inform them of this. Hate to be technical, but that's just how I am on stuff like this.
By Eli (64.12.97.7) on Friday, July 04, 2003 - 12:22 pm: |
As far as Stayin Alive is concerned, I'll have to do my research and try to remember who the artists and songs were, but let me just say that it was at best, forgettable and IMO a "get the money and run" project which was not Thom's usual m.o.

I suppose that the company did not include the Thom Bell songs. I never did have the album in my possession so I never would have know of the exclusion of those songs.

The Ronnie Dyson version was the first version to be released and it was a mid pop charter somewhere around #50.

Little Anthony & The Imperials recorded the original, yet still unreleased version of "Give In To Love". Thom Bell & George Butler produced 4 sides for United Artists Records on August 3, 1970 at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia. They were "Give In To Love", "You And Me", "Help Me Find A Way (To Say I Love You") and "If I Love You". One single was released from that session "Help Me Find A Way (To Say I Love You") b/w "If I Love You". The other two songs remain in the can, although Thom later cut "You And Me" and "If I Love You" on The Stylistics and "Give In In To Love" on Ronnie Dyson. Thom also did a nice version on Dee Dee Bridgewater and Sister Sledge covered it on their 1974 "Circle Of Love" LP.

Give in to love was Bell and Creed and I am not aware of the info on the other one as I do not think that it was one of our tunes.

Hey Bobby, were you on the "Then Came You" sessions? I read somewhere that Thom cut that track with some of the Funk Brothers at the Beach Boys old studio in Hollywood, but kept it quiet. Do you know anything about this? Also there are rumours about the Winter Brothers (Johnny & Edgar) playing on "Rubberband Man." Is there any truth to that also?

Bluedragon,
As I had mentioned in the Phillipe Wynne thread,
that the personnel on Then came you and Rubberband Man were:
Bob Babbitt bass, Charles Collins drums,
Bill Neale and myself on guitars,
Thom Bell on keyboards, Ed Shea on vibes and Larry Washington on percussion.
The first five Spinners albums were recorded in Philly at Sigma Sound Studios including the aforementioned songs.
The remaining albums were recorded ain L.A. at Sound Labs Studios.

By Eli (141.151.15.35) on Sunday, August 10, 2003 - 09:14 pm: |
Caleb,
Yes Thom is an outgoing very loquatious kinda guy.
He has a great sense of humour and is a huge fan of Burt Bacharach and Motown.
IMO, he was the most serious of the producers as far as his method of operation in the studio was concerned.
We made more per session with Thom than anyone else because he was loyal and REALLY appreciated us and our musicianship.
I only wish that he would come back and produce some new things.
By Caleb (171.75.84.134) on Sunday, August 10, 2003 - 09:43 pm: |
Bobby, great post.Didn't know he was into Motown too.Knew he was into Burt Bacharach.Saw where his nephew Leroy put out his own album not too long ago.Read also where Leroy is the nephew or cousin of Robert and Ronald Bell of Kool and the Gang(don't remember which one-saw this on a website). This must mean that Thom is related in some way to them,I guess.Read where he has quite a few relatives in the music business as well.Jerry Bell, his cousin, was the lead singer of The Dazz band in the late 70's-early 80's.There's some others I read about too.Leroy Burgess, another nephew, was a pretty successful disco artist.Quite a family.Caleb
By Eli (141.151.15.35) on Sunday, August 10, 2003 - 09:52 pm: |
I dont think that all that info is factual, especially the Kool and the Gang thing.
In all the years I have know Thom, and it is going on forty, I have NEVER heard him mention any of that stuff, and Thom being as talkative as he is , sure would have mentioned it to me.
I could be wrong.
Thom is a huge HDH fan.
In fact, when he finally met them he told me that they reminded him of two "Joe Jeffersons",
he being the writer or co-writer of many of the Spinners hits."
By Scratcher (65.238.128.39) on Sunday, August 10, 2003 - 09:59 pm: |
Caleb, that info about Jerry Bell can't be correct. I check some sites as well and found a lot of errorneous infomation attributed to this guy. He did not sing lead on "Let It Whip" like some sites will have you believe. Skip Martin sang lead on "Let It Whip." I don't believe a Jerry Bell was ever in the group. He also didn't sing lead on tunes like "Dream Merchant for New Birth or "It's Impossible" as sites indicate, the latter was led by a female vocalist for christ sakes!
As for his being the cousin of Thom Bell and the brother of Archie and Ricky Bell (the late pro football player)...I don't know, but I doubt it. I also never knew that Leroy Burgess (Black Ivory and The Aleem Brothers) was kin to Thom Bell.
By Caleb (171.75.84.134) on Sunday, August 10, 2003 - 10:07 pm: |
Wondered about the kool and the gang tie.Entered his name as a keyword and hundreds of sites came up that mention his name with different pieces of information. Were you able to pick up the Chuck Mangione album? If not,it's worth the search.Caleb
By Eli (141.151.15.35) on Sunday, August 10, 2003 - 10:09 pm: |
None of those people are related to thom and as Scratcher said, Skip Martin was the Dazz Band's lead. The new Birth's male lead was Leslie(I forgot his surname)
There was a "Jerry Bell" in Philly once who used to lie about such things.
It was probably him.
he even claimed to be an Ojay one time!!
By Scratcher (65.238.128.39) on Sunday, August 10, 2003 - 10:13 pm: |
A classic case of a artist (Jerry Bell) telling a writer something and the writer, not knowing any better, writes it up verbatim without checking the info.

There is a guy in Philly named Virgil Ginyard
who claims to be an Elgin.
He even went on an NBC live local news show to tell about his days at Motown.
I lived minutes away fro the studio and I wanted to drive over there to expose this clown, but I did not.
He has people believing him.
He even put out a cd with a bogus, counterfeited Motown "M" on it.
He is currently incarcerrated,

A glaring omission from the original listing........from Elton John
Reissued on CD years later as "The Thom Bell Sessions" - the only Elton John 45 I have ever bought!
There is an campaign on UK TV for Sky at present featuring Elton John miming along to "Are You Ready For Love" - what a great record that is but then when you have the Spinners, what else would you expect.

Regarding the Elton John sessions in October of 1977 at Kaye-Smith Studios in Seattle.
We recorded six songs including the # 1 hit mama cant buy me love.
The lineup was:
Charles Collins, drums
Bob Babbitt, bass
Bobby Eli, guitar
Tony Bell, guitar
Thom Bell, piano/keyboards
George Merrill, keyboards
Larry Washington, congas and bongos
Thom did not let EJ play on the sessions although EJ wanted to so he spent a lot of time in a back room playing the piano(and brooding) there.
It was during these historic sessions that EJ reunited with Bernie Taupin.
One night, mid week heart came in and presented EJ to the key to the city and it was taped for CBS news.
FYI..The studio was co-owned by comedian Danny Kaye.
Heart later bought it and changed the name to Bad Animals Studio.

It was a song the Thom and Poogie started back in the day and frank washington helped him finish it.
BTW, The Delfonics were on the local NBC affiliate morning show today and sang For the love that I gave to you.
They also anounced that they have an indie cd (LA LA Records) out tomorrow.
Poogie was still hitting those magical notes as only he can do.
By RD (65.150.228.238) on Thursday, August 14, 2003 - 01:16 pm: |
"For The Love I Gave To You" is a great Delfonics' B-Side ("When You Get Right Down To It") that should have been an A-side. It got a lot of airplay in Cleveland and I suspect other cities as well. It's too bad that whoever compiles Delfonics' CDs don't have a clue because you won't find it anywhere to date. I wish I could have seen them sing that song, it's one of my favorites next to "Somebody Loves You," "He Don't Really Love You" and "Lying To Myself."

Ever since the mid to late seventies, Tony suffered from some psychological abberrations which eventually played havoc on his mind.
Some say that he felt like he was playing "second fiddle" to Thom and trying too hard to follow in his footsteps..
All I can say is that he was a great talent and a genuine nice person who fell upon some of life's unfortunate situations.

Hi Bobby
a very sad loss indeed regards Tony Bell.
Can you tell me anything regards his time when he was producing alongside Phil Hurts at philly and was it true that they were known as
The young Professionals?
if so was it there name or was it a name for a few others etc?
I know they worked with Jackie Moore and people like The Persuaders.
Both as I have known it were a very creative pairing.
Apologies if this is all mentioned above.
Did you play on Jackie Moores great track of
'both ends against the middle'
bobby?
I know it was a Atlantic release so I am doubtful.
although I am not a 70's fan I still know and appreciate a track no matter what year it is and I really liked Jackie Moores material.
How many different names can you recall Bobby that MFSB were known as.
I know theres loads and dont blame you for trying.
a couple of names I have was
The Impacts
The Daily Diggers
as well as others.
I have the 45 on Crimson(no.1015)
'I've had it'
that was produced by Thom Bell.
cheers

I like that "Mel-o-Delphia thing mate.
It gives me "ideas"
Re:Jackie Moore, yes I played on the stuff on Atlantic and when she went to CBS she requested that I be her producer and I was flattered beyond belief.

Skip,
I havent heard the Delfonics finished cd but I know that it was produced by Poogie in his studio.
Last time I spoke to him , he was supposed to include a co-composition but I am not certain if he has.
I owe him a visit so I will get a copy then.
Caleb,
I spoke to Joe Jefferson several months ago and he is as busy as ever writing and producing in his home studio.
He is a true gentleman and extremely talented writer/producer and a major contributor, albeit unheralded to the sound and attitude of the Spinners Philly productions.

Hi Skip!!
Thank you so much for the love of our music.
I do wish that there were a way to REALLY convince some of these record companies that there should be a resurgence of the REAL Philly sound, a bit updated of course but not without the elements that made it special in the first place like great, well crafted songs, unique and individualistic identifiable artists, great arrangements recorded with real musicians who read real music, and of cource great producer who know their craft..
