Ok Folks, I was in a discussion about Berry Gordy and the Motown Music Business/Establishment if I may call it that.
The other person said that Berry Gordy became well known due to a Promoter named Pete Bennett, who I know is a very BIG Promoter.
I really couldn't agree or disagree. According to the History of Motown, Berry moved here (Detroit) as a young man with his family. He was a Boxer, he worked at Ford Motor Co., then became a song writer and wrote songs for his friend Jackie Wilson and the rest is History.
Does anyone here on this SDF know anything about Pete Bennett promoting or assisting Motown, Berry Gordy, or any of the Artists at Motown???
Please if this sounds familiar to you, PLEASE help settle this discussion...Thanks

hi medusa: I have made many years of study and research regarding the Gordy family and Motown itself, and I have never heard anything about Pete Bennett doing anything that dozens of others that did favors to help Motown did not do as well. Al Abrams was the 1st promotions man/publist...WCHB DJ Larry Dixon called a friend at UA to set up a meeting on Marv Johnson's "come to me" Abrams went to New York with Gordy to help work that deal.

the next key person Gordy hired was Barney Ales who was a hard nosed promo man with Detroit's local distributorship of Mercury Records, he knew how to collect money owed Motown from distributors that were slow or did not want to pay ,after about a year later Ales got Gordon Prince to join him.

now Pete Bennett may have did something to help along the way early on, but so did lots of other people along the way. 3 people in my opinion worked very hard to make it happen, Al Abrams,Barney Ales and #1 Berry Gordy Jr.

Thanks Ron Murphy, that's the same biography I'm familiar with...I have a problem with folks who try to discredit anyone for their acheivements and the importance of that acheivement.
I know that Pete Bennett is a very popular, the Guy is a BIG promoter, but I honestly believe, if he had anything to do with Motown at all, it was the early Motown business, after Berry already had his foot in the door/ established or something like that.
Again, thanks for your response.
