I must have timed out, without knowing it-thus, the unwanted shifting of position of some entries in given categories to other parts of the post. Also, I forgot the other non-Motown soul such as: Lucky To Be Loved By You and Don't Lead Me On Baby-Emanuel Laskey My World Is On Fire-Jimmy Mack Many by J.J. Barnes Lots of Golden World and Solid Hitbound, Thelma, Correc-Tone, Mike Hanks labels, Mickay's, HOB, etc. etc.

RobbK; I have always been impressed with your musical knowledge and choices. You have dicriminating GOOD taste! Many of your 1950's favorites are also mine from that era. Many are not generally known to the public at large, but are much better recordings than most of the "commercial type" output of the 50's & 60's. S.S. |

Thanks, S.S. Your taste seems to be similar to mine in several areas. It seems you (like I) like vocalists who sing from their diaphragms rather than their mouths, and use their voice as a musical instrument. To me the melody and the beat is very important, and I tend toward towards the "sweeter" melodies (except in gospel and blues). I like singers who use their voice strongly. I don't like whispering styles very much (so a lot of so-called folk music or pop sung by singers who haven't trained their voices is not so enjoyable to me). That's not to say I don't enjoy the REAL Bluegrass or folk blues styles (as I do). Based on your posts, I think you have similar tastes in many of these areas. Notice that I didn't list any "jump blues or novelty songs from the '50s", many of which were very popular, and monster hits. I do like a lot of Boogie Woogie and piano "city blues" and "New Orleans" music,- which I didn't list. Of course, i like the "best" (to my own taste) of almost all musical genres. But it took me 3.5 hours to make that list, and I didn't even scratch the surface of the individual songs I've "overplayed" in my 50 years of enjoying music. Listing a few can only provide an idea, as it does the songs not listed an injustice. But, this is a great thread (as were the "Top 5" threads) for getting a better idea of the other SD posters' musical tastes. |
