Why LadyM, you lil' ole devil you. Mr Gaye, you say?? In that vein, may I suggest the following Gaye compositions: I suggest a pinch of Miracles, let's say their Renaissance LP, a taste of The Originals. Add to the mix, a dash of Barry, topped off with hint of The Manhattans & equal helpings of The Dramatics????? Now that's a playlist! Juice Songs furnished upon request.

Hey Phil! I was without web connection from 29 mars until recent days because my internal modem was burned. I have read your Loui Ramirez question in the old forum thread about latin music. The only i knows is a Lp by Loui Ramirez recorded in 1976 in Cotique Records in Bell Sound Studios (NY). This says in a Jazz-Soul Records latin compilation i have that includes Loui Ramirez's "barrio Nuevo" (this tune sounds very similar to Vince Montana and Salsoul Orchestra!!). I see you heard many latin music at the present. Loui Ramirez worked also as arranger for Fanai All-Stars and recently one of the "most played" CD for me is a Fania All-Stars compilation. I was just listening to this track by Jerry Butler. "Where's The Girl" was written and produced by Leiber & Stoller and released as Vee-Jay single 536 in the spring or summer of 1963. It was included on Jerry's "Need To Belong/Giving Up On Love" LP. It's a ballad with a beautiful arrangement by either Gary Sherman or Teacho Wiltshire. The only other two versions that I've heard were by Ben E. King and Steve Rossi. Rossi was from the comedy team of Allen & Rossi where he played straight man to comic Marty Allen ("Hello dere"). Has anyone else heard Jerry's version and if so, what did you think of it? |

Gotta go get the packing done now. Adios, S.S. |

Lars, I sure would love to find that Natural Four LP. As for me, I've been listening to my custom made James Brown CD. Listened to some Disco cuts as well: a little El Coco, Roy Ayers, Boz Scaggs & Black Ivory. Makes me want to fire up the old turntables! |

Hi Manny, when was that Fania All Stars cut recorded featuring Jorge Santana? I didn't know he was ever a member. I listened to Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings live before work, now burning a tape on to a cdr, the Cramps in Montreal May 16 '84 recorded by a friend I've long lost touch with (ie I don't expect he's digitizing his old tapes...) |

Today is the first really nice day of the year here in Rochester. I've got the windows open and catching fresh air that is so good, it makes me wanna cry. Those of you from the northeast will understand. I've got Hot Jamz 92 from LA on via the internet. The variety is nice (a tad heavy on Alicia Keys, but that's a'ight). When I win the Lotto, I'm buying an R&B radio station in Rochester for adults! |

Hey soulful and latin feel friends! I'm glad for your acquisitions of Joe Cuba, Phil. Also, good luck with the search of Loui Ramirez material! Also i'm glad you celebrates the spring this way, friend Linda Di! Hey, Erik T, This tune by Fania All-Stars is in a collection of CD's by papernews "El Pas" called "La msica latina. Grandes mitos del siglo XX" (El Pas / Manzana Producciones discogrficas). There are a volume dedicated to La Lupe, another to Celia Cruz, etc. and I have this dedicated to Fania All-Stars; in the credits only says: "El Ratn" (con Cheo Feliciano), but this tune is recorded live and somebody of the combo made the presentation saying "Cheo Felicianooo!... Y por si esto fuera poco, la guitarra de Jorge Santanaaa!". Really the Jorge's guitar solo in this tune is, IMHO, better than all I have heard by Carlos! In the linner notes spanish music critical Diego A. Manrique says "(...) between 1973 and 1981 Fania All-Stars palyed and performed with many jazz and fusion artists as Eric Gale, Jorge Santana, Wilfrido Vargas, Billy Cobham, Manu Dibango,..." Hello again, soulful sisters & brothers! Hey, Wonder B, Thanks also to your comments i'm at this momment hearding again "Cabo Fro" by Pete Escovedo (from a Union Square double CD latin jazz compilation) and one of the favorites of mine by Eddie Palmieri (piano solo "Taita Caneme" from Masters At Work's "Nuyorican Soul"). Also recently I heard many times the "Danzn (Dance ON)" CD by Arturo Sandoval that contains a very enciclopedia of latin sounds from "la conga" to the funk and a blend of flamenco-descarga "A Mis Abuelos" with a very killer trumpet. I'm glad the Soulful Detroit Family have a french member. Curiously, my second name (Concernau) as the ascendants of my father's family is originary from France (from five or six generations). I asked to you one time (don't remember what was the trhead) about where lives you in France, because sometimes i go to the French Catalonian, Gavarnie, etc. to descend canyons. Are you casually from Toulouse, Pau or the south of France? Best Regards, Peace & Soul Food |

My first book of Soul was the french book "Soul Music" by Jean-Louis Lamaison (Rock & Folk) when don't exist nothing published in spanish about this genre. Peace & Soul Food |

Bonjour Phil: I work at a boarding school in Philly whose founder was from Bordeaux. His name was Stephen Girard and he made Philadelphie his home in the early 1800s. Also, I was in France in 2002 and loved Paree. Went to a soul food restaurant on Rue de Rodeo called Bojangles. I WILL go back prolly in 2005. This year I'm going to Capetown so France will have to wait til next year. Welcome to Soulful Detroit! |
